Hi T E
This is a well done free verse which shows the results of the smoking habit. That is death from cancer of other diseases. I like the idea of the cigarette smoke hiding the facets of your father as much as his death.
I smoked for a while back then. They had just gone up to a dollar a pack when I quit. Now a pack costs as much or mor than a carton cost then.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Enjoy the rest of the week.

P S I would like you to now I recently published my first book titled, " The Interloper and other stories in prose and poetry". It is available on
Amazon.com and there is a link to it at the bottom of my profile bio.
I would not have been able to do this without the help of fellow Fanstorians.

Your poem is so moving it completely captivated me. The way you share memory with regret is truly touching. It feels deeply personal but I also think so many can relate to your feelings. This poem will linger with me long after I save my review. Beautiful work!

You're very kind, Michael. I'm glad to hear this poem made a connection. I'm never sure if these more personal themes will resonate with others. I'm happy the emotion came through.

Good awareness that people didn't really understood back then. My daughter's grandma smoked a pack a day and eventually ended up with COPD with many complications in and out of the hospital until one day she passed away. I think she was in her late 60s very early 70s. I can't quite remember. It is crazy how much you could get for so little, but at the same time like you said it cost less but an unpleasant hidden price to pay. I'll have to look up those two items you're talking about.

Thanks for the review. I grew up in New Jersey, close to Philadelphia where Tastykake originated. They were only available locally at first, but they've broadened their market. They cost $.10; Rat Fink rings. too. Kids wore Rat Fink rings to school. The gliders were $.25 - $.30. Cigarettes were around $.45 a pack. I spent many joyful hours eating Tastykake, wearing my Rat Fink rings, and flying my balsa wood gliders while my dad sat in his chair, smoking.
