Minnie Pearl

I really enjoyed this essay on one of the true unsung heroines of pop culture, the famous Minnie Pearl with that equally famous tag on her hat on the Hee Haw shows. I didn't know that she came from such a cultured background, it certainly contrasts with the character she played on the show. Also that the famous tag itself was rather an accident; Many times these idioms come about this way, I guess. Most of her early career and her later exploits were unknown to us in New York; we were introduced to her on the Hee Haw show. I think of all those historic women characters, Lucille Ball was the most talented, and the one who really shaped the modern concept of the female sitcom heroine. Most of the others were really rooted in the Vaudeville tradition, but Lucy Ball broke out of that and into this concept of the modern American woman, the modern homemaker and wife and mother, with modern issues. She had such an influence on later female comedians like Carol Burnett and Mary Tyler Moore. estory

Thank you for the read and review. My all time favorite is Carol Burnett. But, she always said if it wasn't for Lucille Ball she wouldn't be where she was.

To me, Minnie Pearl was a funny lady with a price tag on her hat. Your bio showed me she was more than her alter ego. There were so many layers to the woman, but her study of drama surprised me the most about the funny lady. Your detailed bio kept this reader interested from beginning to end.

It was my first attempt at a biography. I challenge myself every January to write a new type of poetry or a new category of story. Last year was a western. "Hardly Quicksilver", that took me to November to do it. My muse was no help at all. Writing this was easy. The research was very difficult. There was not a lot to find. And sometimes the writings were contrary. But, I am stubborn, so I kept looking. It only took me to March. I am so glad you liked it. She was a great lady. Karen

Stay stubborn and keep writing.

I remember watching her on television when I was a child and she was so hilarious. This is an excellent biography of her life, I really did not know anything about her. She was a trail blazer for women in comedy and she did live a full life. Excellent writing here that holds the reader's interest.

I appreciate the review. I never knew she had cancer, or that she funded, gave her name, and spread cancer centers all the way to the U.K.! That is really something. The Sarah Conner Cancer Research Institute. Karen

I remember Minnie Pearl from Hee Haw on Saturday nights. She was quite a character. I remember the dresses and the hat. The price tag that dangled from it. This was very interesting. Gretchen

I reserve my sixes for mostly fiction writing where imaginations run wild and born liars makeup and pretend, scribing enthralling words to captivate and fascinate with magical details. On rare occasions when research, hard work, and smooth, polished delivery are applied to non-fiction such as you've written, and about a subject near and dear to the world, I wish a had a seven to give.
Thanks for sharing.

Whoa Nelly! Thanks for the read and nice words. I never knew she had cancer, let alone raised, funded, and gave her name to the first center which morphed into 20 more. I admire her. Karen

I read a lot about her and what a remarkable woman she was, very different from the character we all knew and loved. Hugs, Ric.

Thanks again you sure made my day. Karen

And you've made mine! Ric

Great image and tribute to go with it, Karen. Your love and appreciation of Minnie Pearl comes through very well. I remember her and the Grand Ole Opry. She was one of a kind and broke he mold, as they say. I like the part about not knowing the price tag was on her hat. I thought she did that on purpose, but it was a great trademark that went with her down home style.
Interesting how she came up with the name of the town where all of her characters were from.
I was sorry to hear she had so many health problems and had to be in the nursing home for an extended period of time. A good quote by Mark Twain that fits her style very well. You ended the piece well, too. Thanks for sharing about the tribute, too. Very well done, my friend.

Thank you so much for the read and six stars. This was a challenge I gave myself. I had not written a bio before. I am not counting school. I challenge myself every year, Last year it was a western. And that took until November to write. My muse would not help at all. I got this done in March! I am so happy people like it. Thanks again. Karen

You are very welcome and deserving of the stars and review, Karen. I used to give myself a challenge. Maybe I will have to do that again. You did a great job with it. Were you a fan of Minny Pearl, or you just chose her to write about?
-
I liked her. Her self effacing humor was like what I do. I realized writing her story that I got some of that from her. My Daddy never missed seeing her. Yes. the story going around was that she did it on purpose from the start. And that she bought that hat with the tag on it. Nope. It was her mama's plain hat. She ran to the 10 cent store across the street and got some flowers. She just pinned them on. She was in a hurry. She was distracted. She was doing her monologue when with all her movement the tag fell down.
She just smiled and thought, "Well that is Minnie to a T". She is country and she knows it. A character was firmly born.
I never knew she had cancer. That stuff was never spoken of back then. And I never knew she did so much for cancer research. She felt lucky to survive. Many didn't.
She was a trailblazer and I admire her. Karen

Thanks for sharing everything, Karen. She was lucky to survive cancer. She is a good person to admire.

What an absolutely beautiful write, about an equally amazing and talented woman performer. I so much appreciate the detail included here. I knew of her name but knew so very little about her. Thank you for providing a mini biography on Minnie Pearl. You deserved every one of those six stars.

Betty herself is a wonder. I could fill up a whole note book on her. I looked for someone kind of unknown. Which also made it hard find out stuff. The writing wasn't that hard, But gathering facts took a while. Especially since some were contrary. Oh well, Thank you for the read. Karen

Thanks so much for the read. When I gave myself the task of doing a biography, I wanted to do one about a woman, and about someone little mentioned. I forgot that would be shooting myself in the foot. It took me three months of digging to find enough to stuff to write a story. But, I am happy I did it. Thank you again. Karen
