It is always amazing when you reunite with friends after years spent apart, I can imagine it must've been really special for you and Nancy to reconnect and I thought you did an excellent job of writing about it. Another excellent chapter, Barbara, I really enjoyed it.

You get into these difficult questions in this post, the hard facts of autumn. I like how you write about this in personal terms, relating personal experiences in which we can see ourselves there. The story of the elderly lady with the overwhelming issues she can't handle makes one think of how one would deal with these issues oneself. My dad was lucky he had my sister and me, we had no kids, I was semi retired, my sister worked part time, so we could take care of him. I don't know what would happen to me if I had a stroke. No kids. It's good to stay close to family, if you have a good relationship with family. many don't. estory

I would take "Sure?" to mean, "Is there something you're not telling me?"

Your friendship with a woman you knew in Germany--that's amazing. Talk about a small world.

My husband and I plan to be out of our house within 5 years. He's not looking forward to apartment living, but I am. This is too much for the two of us, and I have no interest in spending hours doing yard work anymore (I did hire a housekeeper a year ago when I hurt my back).

These are decisions we all have to make when we reach a certain age.

You mention errors often... do you use the Grammarly feature on the site? It really does help to clean up what we miss.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I do use Grammarly, but it often doesn't catch everything. Thank you for the support.

I didn't notice any errors, but I was really interested in reading about making that decision as my husband and I are closing in on that time in our lives. I'm 79 in a month and he just turned 78. Two of my kids from our second family are living here now with their 3 kids and our third kid wants to buy the house but not his siblings. So far, we are staying healthy as you and your husband are, but how do we decide. Which son will you pick and why that one?

You are so blessed to have a son like Jeff who is looking out for you and your future life. I'm glad you are there for your friend who really does need to move into assisted living. Wow, but the thought of moving is overwhelming. I have been trying to get my mom to move here but the climate difference is something she doesn't want to face. It would be like moving to a different country. With all such decisions, we can just pray and let God guide us.

Yup. Many of us share that number and its vicinity, which means that we need to begin formulating the plan for next stee as G's of our life. NAH, we'll think about it tomorrow.

It's hard to make decisions like what we're thinking about until it's time. There's a big of pride involved.

Thank you Barbara for paying.

I think many of us are on your wavelength, Barbara, on this subject. We're often rattling around in homes that used to accommodate a family but now only one or two. Thank you for sharing this very relatable post and prompting further thought when it's only too easy to leave it to another day. Take care Debbie

You're correct. The house is too big just for my husband and myself. Especially if it's just one of us.

Nice to hear your boys are all concerned about you. It is good you are thinking along these lines. We already have carers for cleaning and washing and Louise has to have personal care.

You are wise to help Nancy consider her options, and to consider your own. We downsized a few years ago, but we're still in a house with a sizeable garden. Still thinking about whether to move into an over-55's village, but I do like a bit of space. Your concerns are relevant to all of us.

Edit: I did it! It was Nancy (I did!)
