HEDGEROW CAPERS CHAPTER 9

Mummy Mouse Has A Day Out.

Mummy Mouse had finished her chores
Made the beds and swept the floors.
Made a cheese pie for dinner that night
Then looked at the clock and squeaked with delight.
The day was still early, and now she was free
'I'll go to the beach,' she laughed happily.

Daddy was working, so he couldn't go,
The children at school, so they wouldn't know.
It felt a bit naughty, to play in the sun
There, at the beach, without anyone.
She took off her apron, and tidied her hair,
It wouldn't take long, on her bike, to get there.

Then she was off, the sun was so warm
As she rode through the field of yellow sweet corn.
She waved at the Sparrows, feeding their young
And Hettie the Hedgehog, who lay in the sun.
Then all of a sudden Mummy could see
The sand and the ocean, as big as could be!

Mummy Mouse sat upon the hot sand
And looked at the shells she held in her hand.
How pretty they looked, so lovely to see.
'I'll look for some more to take home with me!
The children will love them, but then they would know
That I have been here, when they couldn't go.'

Her eyes lit up; she'd had an idea,
'At the week-end, I'll bring them both here.'
Now she was happy, and had some more fun
Splashing in water, warmed by the sun.
'Time to go home,' she thought with a sigh
As she looked at the sea shore, and whispered, 'Good Bye.'

The children came home, wanting their tea,
Then Daddy came in and said, 'Save some for me!'
They sat down at the table, already laid,
And tucked into the meal that Mummy had made.
Mummy was thinking, with a smile on her face,
How good was their life in this wonderful place.
