A short story about a Hollywood hopeful with skills

An Unexpected Nap

by nomi338

Darren Gold left Omaha Nebraska for California, hoping to find some kind of employment in Hollywood and the movies.

He was not at all sure of his acting abilities, but he did have a particular set of skills.

Darren was an excellent martial artist. He often said that he could be a blonde, blue-eyed stunt double for Bruce Lee. Darren could also duplicate or simulate a number of voices and animal sounds. His ability to imitate a ferocious sounding dog was infamous among his family and friends.

The neighborhood that Darren settled in was or had been notably quiet and free of crime, but lately it had been troubled by a young man who appearing out of the darkness, would accost a person walking down the street, and sticking a gun in their face he would declare the fear inspiring words, “Break yourself fool!”

One night, as he feared it would, Darren encountered the robber. Upon hearing the robber’s demand, Darren began raising his hands and at the same time let go with his famous large dog growl. Startled, the robber took his eyes off Darren and as a result received a knockout blow from Darren.

The robber hit the ground with suddenness, with the gun still in his hand. Darren, not wasting any time, called the police and as soon as they arrived, he disappeared.

The robber was placed under arrest. The police received a shock when they removed the robber's mask to find a white man. The robber Alan Trask, wore a ski mask and tried to sound like a black man to further hide his identity. Meanwhile, Darren became the unknown savior of the neighborhood.

He did find work in Hollywood as a stunt double, an often used extra, and finally as a guy who did voices for cartoon movies and shows.

As for the robber, even after he got out of jail, he was troubled by the memory of growls from a large dog and a punch that delivered an unexpected nap.
