This is such a powerful little piece speaking profound truth.
The power of words cannot be underestimated. I still remember negative words spoken at me when I was a child ... the memory still makes me cry sometimes.
All the best in the contest, Judith. I don't think I've bumped into you before. Nice to meet you. :)

The best 5-7-5 I've read in a long time. Such a powerful use of the form. Such a great truth held in these few short lines. What we scratch on the mind of that newly formed surface remains indelible. As indelible, in fact, as the names I scratched in an antique dining table years ago so that everyone would know where to sit. I got a five and a seven for that! Probably six of the best too!:)

I grew up in a household where it was common occurrence to hurl those words. IT is a tragedy that is not understood until later in life.
This is an emotional 5-7-5 and your photo is perfect for your entry. Best of luck. AT=/

The mistakes we make with children, especially in their early years, it's a wonder how many still turn out pretty well. Enjoyed your poem very much. It really rang true. Best wishes.

You are welcome.
Comment from Patti R.
Your syllable count is spot on for this 5-7-5 contest.
However, I understand the contest intended for the writer to 'have a little fun'. Wow, your poem is terribly sad, for me it doesn't fit with the theme.

I read it to mean fun with the work and not pf the content .
Thanks so much for taking the time to read and revue.

Hi Judith, what does 'pf' mean?
And you are right; how can I presume to know what is defined as fun by someone I have never met.

Five judgmental words
or seven hurled in anger
child lost forever
It's so true. Words can severely harm a child if they are not properly monitored.

Yes, well done. A play on the 5-7-5 count included in the poem. Sorta fun! It all holds together well, with the picture with the big tears. Poor little tyke. Children are so dependant on their caretakers for so long. Good luck in the contest.

What you say is so true. Hurtful words can damage a child, just as physical abuse does. They can easily turn a child against the parent. Sometimes adults are victims of verbal abuse from their spouses, too. Verbal abuse damages one's self esteem. You have written this in perfect 5-7-5 format, too. Excellent last line--child lost forever. judi
