I enjoyed reading this poem. You use the fear some people may have about clowns, but indeed I think you are exploring the fear in itself, it could any fear we may held. Sometimes fear controls our lives. I used to be afraid of the predator, and worries he would be under my bed, lol. We must face our fears if we want to break free. Great presentation and your words bring the scene alive, including the emotions.

Thanks very much, Angel. I'm very happy that you thought so, and you're right, this is a poem more about one's personal fears than it is about clowns. Very perceptive catch on your part...

solid rhyming couplets
my daughter has always been creeped out by clowns, so you're making me laugh at those memories :-)
good alliteration in phrases like wicked white
excellent use of high-impact verbs like maim and destroy to add power to the poem
I can just hear the malicious giggles and teeth gnashing
Brooke :-)

Thanks for digging this one out of the non-promotional pile, and giving me your thought on it, adewpearl. I really appreciate it!
I am still, to this very day, terrified of clowns, to this very day! But, that's how I deal with the things that scare me the most, I write about them. If you ever care to know what scares me, read my work, it's all in there...
Thanks so much, again, it's very much appreciated!

My sister and I took Miranda to a Halloween party when she was small. I swear the clown who was there to entertain the kids was the sweetest, most non-threatening clown in the world, and still Miranda freaked out. LOL
I wonder what it is that just innately scares some people so much because I love clowns. :-) On the other hand, I am totally creeped out by poor, helpless little worms :-)

It is that painted, white face, a hidden agenda hiding beneath a painted façade that scares me so badly. Why do so many people loathe mimes? For exactly the same reasons, I suspect. It's that painted, pale white face that gets 'em, every time.

I love mimes too LOL :-)

Such a profound and incisive work. I was captured from the very first line... Insightful use of the word "clown," double coin of laugh and despair.

Dear Dean,
My two sons were deathly afraid of clowns when they were young. When I was a young boy I thought goblins lived under my bed and if any part of me hung over the edge of the bed I would be in deadly peril of being snatched and taken away. To this day I try not to have any body part dangling over the edge and I am seventy-one. Little did I know that they were inside of me like your poem says. (LOL) A sinister, frightening, engaging read. Well done and I like the music accompanying your poem.
Warm regards, XXXXXX (These are the best skulls I can do)

Thanks very much, Winslow, I appreciate it. I think it's a fear a lot of us still have. I know that I do, personally. I often write about the things that terrify me most. It helps me to face those fears, head-on...
Thanks, again!

Heck, kiwijenny, jut between me and you, I am terrified of clowns myself. That's how I deal with my fears, though, I write about them. You wanna know what scares me? Read my work, it's all in there.
Thanks for the great review, my friend!

I am afraid to go to the bathroom on an airplane. I fly 13 Hour flights to NZ! When a flight attendant asks if I want coffee I screech ,"NO, TEMPTER"....break out in a sweat and everything in there. So with feet like beluga whales I run for a bathroom when we land.Where's the loo is my cry.

Interesting. We currently have head clown in the White House rounded by many sub clowns, all attempting to run our Country.

I am going to print this off and post it at work. I have two co workers who are deathly afraid of clowns. I loved the descriptive passages of the clowns and their creepy antics. One spag, there in there. I think it should be they're in there. Hope that helps . Nice job on the carnival nightmare atmosphere.

Clowns are something else. They have always been scary. They might be fun, but I guess what makes them scary is that they hide behind a mask. What can you expect from them? Great poem as usual.

Yes, it's that "painted on perpetual grin" that creeps people out, I think. Then, there are a few infamous characters, such as John Wayne Gacy, that stick out in people's minds, too.
Thanks for the great review, JM!

All over the world, they are sinister, and people don't know about gacy. I think it's the paint. You got it.

Gosh! I'm glad I had another six to give! You should write a book and each book should have a CD with music to play as they read the poetry. Another freaky one Dean! I got up in the middle of the night, cause I thought I had ghosts and then I read this. Not good! Nothing negative to say about your work EVER!
Thanks for sharing.
