Hello Nolan,
This is an excellent short story with an important message or warning to be careful who you share with. This has happened to a number of others in many fields. Someone shares an idea with a coworker and that person suggests it to management and get credit for it, and perhaps a raise, promotion or bonus. Even in science, people steal ideas claiming them as there own. Sad world in many ways, and beautiful in others.
I suggest writing the story and not releasing it. You'll have the satisfaction of knowing it is complete.
On fanstory, your work is copyrighted, but that's not a guarantee either.

Thank you Robert. My feeling is, if the story is important, even the thief will have the inner agony of knowing that someone else is wiser, more talented and more deserving than he. Also, what goes around, comes back around. Be in expectation of it.

The story is very powerful and shows what can happen by confiding in the relative of the owner. I wonder if the free ticket meant anything to Johnny, although the ideas came from him. I would find it very hard to watch the movie and use the free ticket.
I am sorry you had a similar situation. I am curious about the writing sessions you mentioned. Were you a mentor to the person who ended up getting credit for the story?

The story never got written, at least not in a recognizable manner that I can recall. I may still write it and do something with it. But, that was years ago and I have moved on.

Nomi, this is a wonderful and cautious tale. Always keep close to your chest what stories or ideas you have. Some predator will always be out there somewhere ready to steal what they can. A very well written story. Ulla:)))

I liked how you showed the ambitions of a young writer and his willingness to share his project idea with a "so-called" friend. You also brought out the reality of someone abusing their friendship and claiming ownership of someone else's creativity and hard work. Your ending has a valuable lesson.

While thefts do occur, inspiration also occurs here. We must not confuse the two. I have been inspired many times by a statement or the retelling of an incident in a writer's experience that has caused me to write something that may be related or just have had my imagination sparked in such a way that I was able to create something completely different.

I got burned too. I was a member of of a writing group, and a member asked me to write with him. It was hard scifi. not my babliwick, but he wanted me for my characters and backsrories. No problem. I wrote him thirty characters with backstories. He love them. He wrote me that a company was interested in our book. He said they agreed to a sign up bonus of $50,000.00. Then, after a week, He was gone from the site, and had closed his email. I doubt my name was on the book in any form.

I am sorry for the deception of this low life. I am at the same time grateful that you did not allow this negative to permanently scar you and turn you against writing. Just be aware that karma knows this person's name and whereabouts. His day is coming if it has not already occurred.

There is a lesson to be learned here. It is so true, we need to keep out ideas to ourselves sometimes. Excellent story that teaches the reader to be careful with our writings and heed some caution.
