It sounds as though your worst fears have already happened. You have given an open, honest, heartfelt account of some of your traumatic experiences. There are organizations that offer assistance to seniors. I can name possibilities, but you would have to do some research on line, and make some phone calls. Try:

American Association of Retired People (AARP)
financial assistance
social activities
health-related services
special discounts
Salvation Army of America
Meals on wheels America
Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP)
Federal program administered by each state that provides cash grants
to help pay for heat (contact your State Office for the Aging)

Every state has an Aging Services Division that helps seniors with home and community based services including home health aides, help with household chores, transportation to shopping and medical appointments and counseling on what might help you most.

I'm glad you already receive SNAP and I hope SSI comes through. I will keep you in my prayers that your golden years actually turn gold.

Hi, Karen. Thanks for being so open and honest about your situation. I wish I knew about specific programs in Texas that may be of help to you.

Here in Massachusetts we have resource counselors at our senior centers in each town who are there to introduce us to any program that we may qualify for.

I've applied for subsidized senior housing in my town. The estimated wait time is three years and I have one year on the list...

It would be a Godsend to get in because rent is one third of total income, with no security deposit or last months rent required, and utilities are included!

There are special circumstances such as disability, threat of eviction or imminent homelessness that move you above the standard applications.

I know Texas has a LIHEAP program (I checked) through which you can apply for fuel assistance and emergency rental assistance, as well.

Try calling 211. Texas has that number to inquire about any other resources that could help you.

Inquire in your town about any faith based assistance. In our area the local chapter of Salvation Army also has fuel and rental assistance...

You should be able to get meals at or from your local Senior Center. Ours are $2.00 a meal per day and they will deliver them to our apartment through "Meals on Wheels". -- These are full meals and go a long way stretching our food budget.

If I think of anything else I'll be sure to contact you!

I'm worried these programs will become more scarce under the new administration, so make the calls as soon as you can!

I also live solely on Social Security, and I don't know how the government expects us to survive!

Karenina

You have a sad story, perhaps especially with the last husband who stole your money and probably some of your self-respect, as you wondered why you had ever taken up with him. I'm in Illinois, but I know the local welfare office usually has information about programs that pay your rent and utilities, at least for awhile. Do you have a dead husband who hasn't remarried. Sometimes you can collect part of their Social Security, especially if you didn't remarry since then. Unfortunately, you can't kill the last guy who stole your stuff if he isn't dead. YWCA and YMCA's sometimes have programs to help people. Some cities have funds for those that need help. Illinois also has townships that have funds to help people in their townships. Check for information at the public library if they have one. That's all the ideas I have. I'll try prayer for you.

Your story is a tough one. You've been through quite a bit in your years and $486 monthly doesn't go far.

I don't know your physical abilities, but have you looked for a job to supplement the SS dollars. I collect SS and work full time. Look for emp!it and the will fit your abilitjes. There is a lot of work out there, just have to search for it.

Good luck.
John

Hi Karen I totally understand your fears sometimes I felt under that spell too. At least you tried, to have a different life. I'm just preaching from my glass tower. I'm in Canada so I don't know anything about social programs from USA.

I wish I could help you with Ideas from California, but this state is messed up as far as helpful agencies. I will pray for you Karen. I pray several times a day. I'm so sorry that your husband treated you like that.

Wow! Someone should pro bono a hit on your ex ... after squeezing out all his nickels and dimes.
I had a few things typed, but they were not helpful (Texas politics).
When I owned a mobile home park, some HUD recipients got their utilities paid as well.
But be prepared for all sorts of cuts these next few years.

I had no idea you were in this condition, Karen. Your last husband sounds like a fictional scumbag. I can't believe shits like him are not buried alive already. Also, sorry you live in Texas.

Sending you stuff,

You need a bachelors degree but no teaching experience.

Your story really touched me. The way you shared your struggles was so honest. It was powerful to read about how you've found strength despite everything you've been through. I can feel your determination to keep going. You've got this, and I'm sure brighter days are ahead! Keep going strong!
