Good for you, my lady!! I think these little 'girls' complaining about how things are 'unfair' nowadays have no idea what things were like for females back in the seventies (even eighties)... it truly was a man's world. Bet you were just damned determined not to be anything less than the best! ;) Thanx for sharing! ;) Yvette

Just as well you never needed to use the rifle after that,as there would not have been sandbags provided for you to stand on. An interesting story! Best wishes for the contest.

It's funny, but I know basic training covers the same disciplines that those assigned to combat are, so it doesn't surprise, my brother fought in Vietnam and did additional jungle condition training which was really tough, he was wounded, but came home safely, but he died of lung cancer, possibly from agent orange?!? I miss him, beautifully written Cindy, blessings Roy

When I went through basic training, the shooting of the rifle was one thing that was a difficult thing for me because I had never handled a rifle or firearm before. I understood your story completely. May you have a wonderful day. And I would also like to say to you thank you for your service. Patricia

I enjoyed reading a little of your personal history story. I hope it does well in the contest. And now I know a little more of what made you "you," and found it interesting.

Thank God you never needed the gun-I mean, weapon, again! This is a very good entry for the True Story Contest, one many might not expect from you. Best wishes!

Wow! Cindy, you certainly stopped me in my tracks with this one. It was kind of like when I learned (after 70 years) that my mother had been a marksman. I couldn't even imagine a gun in her hands, let alone a pro at shooting it. Thank you for your service and for sharing this wonderful story.
Smiles, Carol

Thank you for the lovely review. Was your mom a WAC?
reply by Begin Again on 08-Dec-2024
No - she was the oldest of three daughters, the studious one, ignored by her father. A friend taught her to shoot and when her father, mockingly challenged her (for his favorite rifle) She showed him what she could do. And got the rifle! But she never told me the story or showed me the pictures until she was close to the end of her life.

Cindy dear, a wonderful true story of your time in the Women's Army Corp. Thank you for your service, my friend. You could fit under my arm! I'm 5' 10". I could visually see you at target practice. I'm glad you weren't hurt! My goodness, how brave you are. A wonderful look at you, and contest entry. Fingers crossed for a win!
Sending you both my best today as always.
Love,
Sal

I smiled when I read "since I was only 5'0" at the time". Did you shrink or get taller since then?

They put you in a foxhole without any training as to how to just hold and shoot a rifle? I bet you weren't the only one to have an incident like you did.

I really liked your last paragraph.

This is a good story. You could flesh it out a little, tell us more about the surroundings, maybe describe the drill sergeant, tell us about how you felt - nervous, sick to your stomach, etc.

Thanks for sharing your story and good luck in the contest.
