It is so tough for people struggling like this. I've had my own experiences with depression in the past, but I have come through the other side. Talking really does help. An excellent, important piece. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for the kind review. I think people who have experienced it are the ones who truly understand. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain. I just want of get awareness out there that the strugle is real.

Cecilia, you can write. Don't allow that dark monster to intrude on your writing. Your talent needs to be seen and read. You are seriously good. Do not be ashamed. Just hold your head high and keep writing.

Bob,
Thank you for the kind words. I always loved writing when I was younger, but life happened. Now that I am retired I am going dedicate my time to the craft. Thank you for the encouraging words.

Depression is a terrible thing and many people suffer with it and as you say it it is indiscriminate. Winston Churchill suffered with it and found it hard to cope. I am glad that it is under control with drugs and people are more open about it these days. A poignant poem for the contest, thank you for sharing your personal story with us, love Dolly x

Dolly,
Thank you for the kind words. I am just trying to make people without depression understand how it feels. 22 veterans a day commit suicide and that's 22 to many. I just want people without depression to understand the struggle.

nicely done poem about depression you really nailed it. You expressed how it feels to be in the grip of depression and how alone you feel when you are in the midst of it.

Jake,
Thank you for the kind review. This is a true story of what it feels like. I wish I could get this published outside this forum, so people can truly understand.
-
you should look into substack. It is a free site where you can easily post things cut and paste from word documents. If you use zamzar software you can convert your word documents into a MP# and publish a podcast on Substack as well. It is easy to use.

Thank you I will take that under advisement and check it out.

I know Cecilia. Effexor is not a fair trade for normalcy, is it? I hurt in a way people can never understand. Even when I win at something big or someone shows me, love, I just don't feel part of the picture. I'm like an outsider even when I'm just looking in the mirror. You just keep going for yourself, because almost no one is going to understand and most of the time I don't even know how to describe what I'm feeling anyway. Just hang on.

I feel you. I am on 225mg Effexor, 5mg Abilify, and 10mg Prozac. It keeps me even keeled. I wonder what it feels like to be "normal" what ever that is? Stay strong. You are not alone.

As someone who understands I know the struggle is real. Like Pink Floyd song states I'm, "Comfortably Numb"
I used to have a friend who would give me good belly laughs, but we moved away and I haven't had any since.
-
Belly laughs? Is that anything like a belly dance? I'm confused.
-
Belly laughs are when you laugh so much and so hard you belly hurts when you're done.

Thank you for writing about this. I have had clinical depression for years, and refuse to let it define me...
Just as we should not be stigmatized with a physical ailment--(Cancer, Lupus, Parkinson's) -- so we should not be ostracized because of a mental condition causing this mood disorder.
It's crucial that you are being treated!
I hope your son finds hope in the fact that you are "doing fine today."
It often runs in families! I have lost five family members to suicide.
Each of them needed comprehensive care, but, like so many of us, did not want to be set apart as "other."
To quote a famous poet:
"Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad." - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Although sadness is a natural emotion born of a distressing situation, depression is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain -- still, I recall the many wells meaning people in my life misreading me as " aloof" or telling me to "buck-up" and be happy!
As you express so well...it's so much deeper than that!

Karenina,
Hi again. Thank you for the review. Yes, many people don't seek treatment, because of the stigma attached. I too have lost someone to suicide and it sucks. I am sorry for your loss. There needs to be more awareness out there. The rate for veterans is 22 a day and thats sad. The Veterans Administration(VA) has now only recognized the trauma of war. It's only been the last 10 years or so. Shame.

Yes. As an RN I spent a year caring for PTSD Vietnam vets on a locked ward.
There is a special shame in how we have lived up to our responsibility to our veterans!
-
Sad fact is the Vietnam veterans were the treated the worst of any generation. I worked at the VA and these guys told me horrible stories about coming back. Sad, our country treats vets the way they do.
-
Agreed... Our greatest patriots are seemingly invisible.

This free verse, Depression, touches on that one affliction that leaves no apparent marks but separates us from friends and family quite easily. Knowing it exists and can be understood, is the biggest step forward.

Hi Bill,
Depression and other mental health illnesses need to be put out there for all to see without the stigma. My son suffers from depression and it breaks my heart that I can't help him. I understand his hell.

Yes, I suffered with it briefly when I was only a teenager, my first had dumped me, my best friend had committed suicide, I'm an optimist by nature, but nobody listened in those days, I'm not sure they do today, beautifully written Cecilia, blessings Roy

Roy,
Thank you for the feedback. I will fix that typo ASAP. Thank you seeing that. Depression sucks and we need more awareness. It shoudn't be a stigma in todays world.
-
You're right Cecilia, be blessed. Roy

Depression is so difficult to deal with. Clinical depression is a debilitating disease. I appreciate your comments and your descriptive narrative through the poem describing the feelings and the impressions. It takes courage to write about one's self, Especially if it deals with something as serious as this. Glad to see from your notes that you are managing and doing well. I wish you the best.
Robert.

Thank you for the kind review. In toady's world depression shouldn't be a stigma still. Like the one verse says, "The struggle is real" true story.

It us difficult to just get over something that is inherent in our genetic makeup. As you have aptly pointed out, all we can do is manage those feelings that can easily overwhelm us. I'm glad you're doing fine. And it's good to talk about your feelings openly.

June,
Thank you for your kind review. I have lived with depression off and on for the last 40 years. I'm not ashamed and I could careless if theres still a stigma out there. People need to be educated on the fact that it's a chemical imbalance and we didn't wake up and decide to depressed, or did we? (ha, ha)
