I like the term "brainbox." I had never heard of it before, it is a clever word.
I am a nurse, so I enjoyed your story and also liked the mention of ornithology, I bird watch as well occasionally. Excellent writing that has a smooth flow to it and holds the reader's interest. This is a good entry for the contest.
