The picture is grand. The poetry is well done. But considering the topic of the poem, why did you choose the girly font? It is all wrong, and pulls down your writing. Also, the mute matting does not display your work at it's best. A buckskin would be great. Karen

I didn't think of that. But isn't he handsome, though?

An interesting description of the battle of the gladiators. The poem is well written and brings the reader to the fight, very imaginative. The style of font and the picture are excellent additions to the mood of the piece. Evo

The language you've chosen adds an extra element of atmosphere to this story of a battle to the death.

There are a couple of questions this left me contemplating: firstly, was it an unfair fight because one of the opponents was easily outmatched, or was it unfair because they had to fight at all, against their wills? Secondly, there is the last line, "the devil's enemy had to die". So is the devil the victor, or is the victor his emissary? I'm not sure how to interpret this.

That's not a criticism, by the way - I'm just curious.

I think you've done very well here in sharing this story about the harsh realities of conflict. Nice job.

Craig

Hi Craig, thank you for your feedback. To answer your question, the 'devil's enemy' was the Christians who were killed for their religious beliefs, hence the unfair fight.

History is my favorite and war is in History. You picked the perfect picture to draw people to your writing. That got my attention off gate. I am glad I stopped by

Clever poem that it reminds me of the Penepolese war. This part captures very well a gladiator journey "ithin the confines of the arena,
immersed in the luminous light.
The battle begins,
the race is on,
feeling exposed in this unfair fight." Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings and the contest.

What a grand story you have told in your poem. You get the different effects with the sounds and emotions that really draw the reader in.

I have a suggestion for one line:

immersed in the luminous light.
(Luminous really just means 'light emitting', so putting it with light doesn't mean much. it is often used as a substitute word for light, like "there was a luminous object in the sky" meaning 'light emitting object in the sky'. So luminous does not add anything to your word light, it's redundant.)

I think you have a great entry for the contest here. Thank you for sharing!

You certainly captured the all round tension with your words, Kahlani, building up to the final verse very well.
'Swishing of the blade, the clanging of steel'
Well done.

WHOA!!! This is INTENSE and exciting and riveting! You did quite the job describing something archaic, yet I could not have been more mesmerized by it! Great choice of art, too, and even your font was the perfect cherry on top of this fabulous post! I bet this will do GREAT at the polls! Good luck to you! xoxox
