Wow, you're a very powerful writer, Jim! I first thought I was reading something akin to that "Twilight Zone" episode where the shopkeeper knew what each customer needed, even when they didn't. I remember his telling one man he needed a pair of scissors and, when his tie got caught in the shredder and ran the risk of strangling him, he used the scissors to cut it.

You had me completely in that vein with the last customer. I, too, assumed he was planning suicide, and using the note paper to leave suicide notes for those he thought would care. You completely took me by surprise with what he actually intended those items for. That he actually needed them to represent his love for and gratitude to God is such a lovely and refreshing idea, and made me feel so much better than the original idea you were so deviously leading me towards. Thank you for leaving me with a big smile!

Wow, this story is amazing, I wish to had a 6:) ""You couldn't be more wrong!" the customer laughed. "I'm buying that gun to hang on my wall to remind me of my days as a dead man before the Lord rescued me. And these stilettos, see? When one is placed horizontally and one vertically, they make a perfect cross, the symbol of my redeemer.""

Well, that was fun! Mister Everyman had me fooled along with Joe, but I thought he was planning a murder and some extortion notes. I'm wondering if "Litle" is a typo or a little error Joe made...
The story has legs! Let's see Joe again soon.

A wonderful story - and it shows very well how easily we can be wrong in our judgments about others. A super contrast between what the shopkeeper thought and the beautiful reality.
Well done. I like it a lot.

This is beautifully written A very nice short story that gives a glimpse from the life of ordinary peile .Joe's super confidence takes a hit here .I feel he needed it for his smugness ..
There is a story by Somerset Maugham called 'Mr Know All'. It is a short story worth reading..Your story, though very different , reminded me of its persona..

I loved this story. It was very interesting and clever. The last man was the most intriguing. Great job on this. It was well written and very descriptive.

Wow, what an amazing post! You put being judgmental in perspective, don't you? You cannot know what's in another person's mind. You think you can, and then a whole different motivation pops up. A gentle reminder to keep our judging to ourselves. Also a gentle reminder that a Jesus can be represented in many ways by many different folks.

Take care,
Hugs,
Rhonda

This is a good upset in expectations. As the reader, I didn't know where the purchases were going, and then the main character gave us a grim idea. Then the purchaser had a beautiful story to tell. I liked this.

Jim,
A great little flash fiction on not rushing to judgment. Not everyone's repentence looks the same but it is the heart of change that matters. Thank you for sharing and my very best in the contest.

Yes, sir, we all have a tendency to assume, and of course, we all know what happens when we do. Our hearts stay hidden until we open it up and let our feelings and thoughts show. Thanks for sharing.
