Excellent piece. I write traditional poetry too, so I thoroughly enjoyed this. I've never had an appreciation for free verse or what I call Shakespearean style poetry. Too fancy for this old country boy.
Thank you for keeping rhyme alive for the common readers.

This sonnet, The Dying Poet, has the proper formatting and reminds me of John Milton's fears that all he had inside would be trapped as his sight waned.
When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one Talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my Soul more bent

How ironic that his ink is his demise. Good metaphor in the third verse because when he writes its from within. Great job. Good luck with the contest. Have a great day

It would be nice if our writings lived on after us. Not just tucked in a drawer until someone tosses them out. The writer leaves their legacy one page at a time. Great poem. Gretchen

So much to say about this! I feel like I relate so much to the dying poet in this piece. I feel like I myself am constantly writing trying to capture the moments fleeting beauty or pain. If there is an emotion I actually feel it is worth noting. "He's been dying long before his death" is full of emotion and gives power to the meaning of the poem and how it flows so well into the poet finally leaving but the words living on. Very well done!

Your talent sparkles in this one, Jess. I admire anyone who can pen a beautiful sonnet. This one is exceptional and tells a poignant, sad story of a poet who's in the grip of death and writes on. I feel that way when my sickness has me in it's grip and I push it aside to write. Brava!
Sending you my best today as always, and blessings to you and yours,

A beautiful job with this poem, Jess. Here we have a poet nearing the end, but as you say, he's known he's been dying for some time, and it's of little consequence because he goes about his business as always. He continues to write right up until the end because that's what he does. Though others may wonder about him because some of his verse may take his mind into dark places, he's eager to know about everything, even the dark parts of life. That's just they way he is, and the result is that he understands life more deeply.

He doesn't fear death and will keep writing right up to the end, but to those left behind, he never really dies because his words live on.

I guess whether you are a poet, or anything else, this would be a good way to meet your end--just keep doing what you've always done and, when it's your time, leave knowing that you will be remembered, hopefully fondly, by those you left behind.

Of course, you've said all this much more succinctly and beautifully, but that's what poetry is all about.

This is a beautifully written and presented sonnet. I enjoyed very much listening to it and it flows extremely well and is as it is read aloud. I wish for you the very best of weekends. God bless. Patricia .
