Harambe,
This short poem has good use of personification, alliteration and irony.
It is the flowers staring at us instead of use staring at the flowers. Like a starinig contest.
I like the artwork.
Keep writing and stay heatlhy
Good luck in the contest.

Congratulations for being mentioned! I'm glad you mentioned poem first, pic second. It's always an odd risk to pair things. I like this poem both ways... but without pic I see something different. I think Ukraine came to mind. Thanks!

The picture was definitely from the Ukraine context -- the Haiku itself was inspired from another, rather quotidian picture of a field of sunflowers, so I thought to shake things up a bit. Thanks very much Beri!

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. Your poem with the artwork speaks volumes about what's wrong with our society. I've missed you. I hope you're well. Good luck with the contest.

Thank you Barbara. This piece was an oblique reference to current events in the Ukraine war. I am back -- for a very limited time, considering my somewhat aggressive work schedule of late. Hope you are well!

I've missed you and said a prayer a few days ago that everything is okay with you.

Thank you Barabara! I just stopped writing HERE because I started a second job and have been working crazy hours since June just trying to get by. And none of that has changed, so I won't be on here that much -- and most of my writing at this point goes to my four-year-old nephew, and no one else sees it. Maybe someday I'll figure out a way to sell it, to crazy people.

Ciao !
A food for thought poem!
Once we die and get buried we provide much nutrients for the flora.
I read yesterday though that all the decomposing bodies left on the streets and in destroyed buildings need to be buried to avoid a colera outbreak.
Nice to see you back posting , you were missed.
PS: have you heard about organic burial pods?
The body or ashes put in an egg shaped pod, provide nutrients to the young tree planted above.

I like the haiku. I like the colored enlarged font. I think the text if centered on the visual would make it more focal. I do not get your meaning even with the note for using a skeleton underneath the sunflowers. I think it is an elegant haiku and a visual of sunflowers alone would keep the focus on your text. I find the skeleton distracts from your poem.

Hi Sandra, thank you for the detailed review! The reasoning for the skeleton was the ongoing context of the Russia-Ukraine war. A year ago, almost all my writing pieces were about that. The haiku was written before I found the picture though, so it definitely reads quite differently without it. Also, thanks for the alignment suggestion. I will play around with it a bit when I put this into print format in the future.

You're right. The artwork is a great find. There is so much contrast in the words, and the artwork validates their meaning. Beauty always stands above the ugly in the world. Nice!

Thanks John! A much belated reply from me, as I have taken to long breaks from this site. This was certainly one of my better short works, coinciding with a fairly high death rate in the Russia-Ukraine war.
