Whatever happened to Hoosier and Kentucky high school basketball. Intergration? City teams began dominating and the small white agricultural schools were dismissed. Now U of I is fighting to survive.

Yes, ever since Bobby Knight left Indiana basketball went down the tubes. They can't find a good coach these days and no recruiting....

Wow, driving at 10. Definitely not allowed today! I do remember a few times my parents let me turn the car on and sit in the driver's seat as a child. No driving, though. This story about your childhood joys and antics was amusing.

Unaware of the lifestyle is of boy in Indiana I began to read. I like the details performed by a 10 year old on the court and driver's set. I like how you regarded the family as good and curious about living. I respect the sharing of the events taken place over school years.

Yes, although our main winter sport is Aussie football, I was once tall enough to lead the first ruck which one tapped the football to the smaller players who were called rovers, or followers, but then everybody passed me, and I became a rover, heh heh, but a pretty good one, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Harry, I enjoyed this story too! We have even more in common, I'm tall too! I'm 5' 10". However my best sport was track and field. My long legs can go! My dad and brother were all mechanics and built a car one summer. I can drive anything with a stick shift. I miss driving now that I'm blind. I miss it so much, especially my stick shift Saab. A great read and contest entry.

Sending you my best today as always, and my best wishes for the upcoming contest.
Sally :)) Xos

I smiled as I read the part about you driving the car around the parking lot. My wild child, Jeff, one time we were eating on the way home from one of my boys' sporting event, I don't remember which one. As I was paying asked for the carkeys. Like a dummy, I gave them to him. He moved the parking space and laughed as we searched for the car. He never got the keys again, until he had a license. Boys!! Thank you for sharing this story with us.

Fine times, when children and parents were free to explore, and try new things without the arm reach of the state. I think at that time we had more freedom to be kids. thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

Harry,

Another great story of your life. I didn't learn to drive until I was 21. I grew up poor and my mother never had a driver's license.

You sure did grow tall as a youth.

Well done my friend

Cecilia

Just as long as you weren't playing basketball and driving at the same time!! Mind you, with your determined nature, I reckon you would have mastered that too! I love the story about driving around the parking lot. And it would be my guess that young lads are, even today, are still driving tractors etc on farmland, although I don't want to think about it too much! Anyway, I rather think you were the apple of your mother's eye and her lenience certainly did you no harm.
This is another lovely and engaging story of growing up, Harry! It brings a smile to my face, much needed on a rainy grey day in the UK. Well done! Debbie

my mother(')s every move
No need to repeat driving at 10
People used to do that(,) leave the keys in the car

Your story instantly brought Alan Jackson's song ,,,,,
Just an old half-ton shortbed Ford
My uncle bought new, in '64
Daddy got it right, 'cause the engine was smoking
A couple of burnt valves, and he had it going
He'd let me drive her when we haul off a load
Down a dirt strip where we'd dump trash off of Thigpen Road
I'd sit up in the seat and stretch my feet out to the pedels
Smiling like a hero that just received his medal
It was just an old hand-me-down Ford
With three-speed on the column and a dent in the door
A young boy, two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel and
And I would press that clutch
And I would, keep it right
He'd say, "a little slower son; you're doing just fine"
Just a dirt road with trash on each side
But I was Mario Andretti
When daddy let me
Drive
I'm grown up now
Three daughters of my own
I let them drive my old jeep
Across the pasture at our home

And it was based on a true story of his life as well.
Smiles, Carol
