Hello Author, I thought this is wonderful entry to the contest. You brought back so many great memories with this song. I had to play it at the end, singing along with my eyes closed, remembering all the times I sat in some little hole-in-the-wall bar, with a single guitar player up front doing his thing, ending the set with American Pie, the whole place singing along.
The only thing... has it really been 50 years? Damn! I'm OLD! Thanks for that reminder! ;)

Susan, as always, you are so sweet! I did lots of research on this before writing and found these were the most popular ideas of what the song meant. Such a Time of nostalgia for all who I hear from. However when McLean was asked what it meant to him, he said that it meant he never had to work again. Lol. Thanks for your very kind comments and your gracious six stars! Much appreciated my friend!

What a great idea; a nostalgic poem for Baby Boomers inserted into a classic, generation-defining song. It was both creative and impactful. Well done.
I especially enjoyed the tributes to so many of the cultural icons and values we lost during that tumultuous decade of social upheaval and radical change; musicians, politicians, faith and innocence. That era truly was the day the music died (and so much more).

Thanks Curt! As always you are so very sweet. I cannot get too much of this song. That is why I picked it, as just like you the nostalgia has happy but sad memories. Especially remembering where we were when Kennedy was shot. I think I was in third grade at the time, in country school. The fact that so many here have such similar feelings looking back at that day, brings so many of us together. Not sure if you read this too, but more recently when McLean is asked what this song means, he says it means he doesn't have to work again. Lol! Thanks my friend for you kind comments!

Nicely done. That is a great song but Don McClean is not a very nice man. He lived nearby for a number of years and my son coached his son. I don't know if Don is still around or not.

This was wonderful and I can so relate to the sixties and the loss of so many rock and rollers of that time. Thanks for addressing so much of what was going on during those termulate times. I was young and so innocent during these times. Vietnam and the assassinations of many of our heroes were hard to deal with and even harder to wrap our heads around. Thank you for bringing up a favorite tune of mine called American Pie.

Awe Jesse, I thank you so much for being a fellow lover of this song, but also of the decade that started off w much innocence. I did a lot of new research into this song and found out that Don McLean actually dedicated this song to Buddy Holly, who he felt the music died after the plane crash and who was also a friend and believed after so many songs by Jagger and also when the Beatles started getting strange, were another reason he said the music died.
Are you one of us who still remembers where you were and how you felt when finding out JFK was shot. A little fun fact: did you know that of our two assassinated presidents, Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had one named Lincoln.Thank you my dear friend for the very kind words and for the six stars! So appreciated!

Yes, I remember where I was when Kennedy was shot. I was in elementary school and saw the older girls crying and knew then that something big had occurred. I also knew that Mcclean wrote the song about Buddy Holly. Don loved Maclean's music. I loved the later Beatle's music as much as the early music they sang. I changed as they changed so I could relate so much!

Carol, as always you are so kind. Don't feel bad about being confused about this song, as I am seeing, many felt the same way. As I did my research, I read many interpretations. The ones in my poem were written about the most. I do know for sure Maclean felt the music died after the plane crash and the innocence lost of the decade. However the song was dedicated to Buddy Holly. A fun fact about our only two assassinated presidents; Lincoln had a secretary named Kennedy and Kennedy had one named Lincoln.

In spite of the difficulties with your ipad, the form of you poem is clear and apt. The interspersing of the lyrics with reference to other musicians helps to flesh out the time. The combination of history and nostalgia pulls me although I am somewhat older than you, your comments ring true. I love the picture of the American Pie.

Without that generation of music, we would still be dancing to Lawrence Welk type music. Nothing wrong with it, but we had to wake up and introduce some grit and excitement into what made teenagers move and groove. Most of today's music would not exist without the introduction and explosion of Rock & Roll.

I agree with that Nomi. Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson didn't quite fit the bill for great rock. However what I didn't agree with when Mick Jagger and John Lennon's songs promoted violence. There already was too much of that in the era. Thanks again my very dear friend for your kind comments.
