You have defined bigotry in the real sense of its word, the raw reality you painted, drawn from your past is a glaring, stark reality that many of us from the outside, cannot even fathom. The gravity of how bigotry can ruin people's lives, assaulted my sensibilities and I realize, how people suffer from absurd notions in a world we are not aware of. In a divided country like Ireland, our own troubles, are just like child's play. What an exceptional write.

This is excellent and I hope it wins the contest. You back your essay up with vivid, personal stories of "the troubles." My mouth drops open. This is bigotry in action. You express yourself clearly and powerfully. Thank you for sharing.

Hello there Mr. Giraffmang (an interesting name you got there... :)
Having read this after seeing the prompt, I voted for it straight away.
Not only have you adhered to the competition with great clarity, but you have also given a brilliantly written account of what and why 'bigotry' exists, and how people like yourself can overcome it.
Interesting isn't it, how these awful things become impregnated into society and end up becoming the norm.
I am from England myself and the family name can be traced back to here over nine hundred years. Prior to that, we came from Barbados. If we look back far enough, it's quite likely that we are all from cultures very different from the ones we hold today.
I am fully aware of the atrocities my country has dealt upon the Irish. I am also aware of the fact that religion is often used as an excuse to divide and rule over others.
Human's are rotten at times...
Personally I hold neither a religious bent nor patriotic stance.
I'm just an earthling...
Thoroughly enjoyed reading your entry and look forward to reading more of your work.
It was a great honor to read this...
Clear winner for me
Kind regards

giraffmang--
Thanks for the powerful piece. I guess I had the notion most of the "bigotry" was over up there -- guess not. Maybe it's improved since you got out?
But this is tough like your wounds and your memories. No poetry in it but that, and that's all that's needed.
I have no sixes left.
Thanks

I've never understood racism or bigotry. Lost family to the holocaust but I don't blame anyone who's German for it. I was raised to never judge a book by it's cover. It's what's on the inside that counts. I appreciate that we're all unique individuals. Why can't we respect our differences?

This is a very well written story/article on bigotry. I see no spag. I agree that our perspective change as we change. Sometimes bigots are just young and dumb and it changes with maturity. Some are so ingrained with it from the upbringing. I see this doing well in the contest and I am happy for you. It is very deserving.

This is a thought provoking write. I was in England during the atrocities that was going on in Northern Island. I feel sympathy for you having to endure these violent times. I will not be here today if in the 80s I'd gone into that pub in central London where the IRA planted a bomb killing many. By some fluke my friends and I went to another pub a few blocks away. Well done and best of luck in the contest.

Many thanks for the thoughtful response to this. I have been in 2 bomb blasts myself and only had minor cuts and bruising thankfully. I am still religious, just not denominational.
Best of luck to you as well.

I'm not sure I have an adequate response to this. I can't imagine what it would have been like growing up in such a place at such a time, although this essay does shed light on that. I know that in much of U.S., where I live, such things are unimaginable and in that way, we are lucky. Even when we have sporadic rioting about some perceived injustice, it is usually short-lived. But I suppose long-term--and random and unjust--violence would leave deep scars on everyone involved. Thank you for sharing this.

Wow... very powerful essay on the single word, bigotry.
You wrote this in a flawless manner, both story-like and in a sense in a public speaking voice (I'm not sure how else to explain that).
We are not born bigoted, simply "learn as we go" and have to work hard at un-doing what leads us down those paths.
Nicely done, my friend. John
