Strange that a man could go down to the field when Andrew was injured but a woman could not. Your reactions to his injury and your feelings about the chiropractor are well expressed. I've known of some athletes who have to change their career plans because of a permanent sports injury. Good that a doctor replaced that chiropractor. He certainly wasn't qualified to dispute the findings of the medical doctors and the need for surgery. You could tighten this up a bit. Concentrate on the important stuff and built the tension, like you do in your novels. For instance, do you need all the information about the team's previous record? Another example of where you might trim things--first paragraph, you could cut wording to something like "We were living in South Carolina in the fall of 2003." This was life-changing for your son, if it meant he couldn't attend West Point after his injury. judi

I enjoy reading the things you post about your family. I guess your son has no regrets that he continued to play throughout the season. I can understand your feeling about him being injured and not getting the proper treatment right away.

Barbara,
This is a great story. Boys and their football. My youngest played football until he broke his leg on the field. I put a no football ever policy into place.
You have to love them. It's great that your son didn't get addicted to pain killers.

That injury sounds horrendous but how would you know, especially as he was carrying on as normal, albeit on strong painkillers? A couple of edits: It was decided that we should be in different conferences but still (play) ....

A sad commentary on the totally misdiagnosis by the team doctor. Are chiropractors considered to be real doctors, and where did your son get his "pain relievers"? Torn ACLs are an easy diagnosis to make, simple manipulation and abnormal instability of the stifle joint is very apparent. Obviously the coach didn't care as he was willing to send a player with an obvious problem back into the game. Everyone should have been sued.

The chiropractor okayed it and he was believed. I won't every go to one.

I personally think too much pressure is on boys and their parents regarding football. It needs to be safer. I'm glad Andrew is OK and you top get along.

Yes, football is dangerous. I've had boys with broken bones playing basketball too.

I had one daughter. My sister had twin boys playing sports. I can't even imagine.

My boys did football, baseball, basketball, and one included wrestling.
