That is a great story. I remember those days and know the way life moves on and leaves so much might have been and almost was. Your piece was a real trip back.

Thank you so much, Nancy, for your kind words and generous review. I'm glad I could take you back in time to a period you could remember and relate to. It's tends to get harder for me to do. LOL. You described the times magnificently, "so much might have been . . . and almost was." The story of life. LOL. Much appreciate!

This is really good. You have a flair for writing good poetry and for creating a story about a nearly life-long almost romance. Thirty years is a long time to keep a flame burning without getting any nearer to a meaningful relationship.

Thank you so much, Carol, for your extra special six-star review and kind words. Yes, thirty years is certainly a long time to keep a flame burning without it becoming more permanent. But sadly, so many of us get caught up in life with no perception of time that, slips away before we know it. I just wanted to write something outside my comfort zone, especially, my stab at poetry, which I don't do. LOL. I'm glad you liked it. I appreciate your writing and reviews, but most of all, You!

You did a great job with your story, Ric. I enjoyed reading it.
I liked everything about it--the characters were well developed,
the dialogue was natural, and the theme carried well throughout.
Your story was well-paced with great imagery. I could visualize
the characters. It was funny--even hilarious in parts--and poignant
at the same time. Your beginning and ending poem was well done.
This reminded me of the fact one never knows what the future holds,
but be a participant.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you so much, Jan, for your kind comments and generous review. There is nothing that makes me happier than when a talented writer whom I read and enjoy regularly reads my posts and find something positive. I appreciate your stories, reviews, and most of all, YOU!

Great writing. Nice style.
I particularly like the 'pouting' line.
he's, my brother.- Why the comma?
But am I to understand that their was no marriage???
The life and responsibilities must have been huge.
Best wishes.

Thank you, Wayne, for your generous review and kind words. Why the comma . . . darned if I know. Just one of those things that I do to keep readers in tune with my inadequacies, I guess. LOL. No marriage, just a lot of unfulfilled wishes on both parts. Your encouraging words are greatly appreciated!

Ric, what an unusual but enjoyable read. You started with a good poem and ended with a sad, but good poem. Sandwiched in between was a great story with a plot driven by an eccentric, male character who falls in love with a stranger. Your characters were believable. The dialogue was well-conceived. I wanted a happy ending, but it was not to be. Well-done!

Thank you so much, Sandra, for your generous review and kind words. I just wanted to do something different, outside my comfort zone. I don't write poetry, or know the first thing about it, but with leaving readers hanging after a quick meet-up in a bar, there had to be more of something. LOL. I'm a sucker for happy endings, but sadly in life, it doesn't always work out that way. I appreciate kind and encouraging review!

You are welcome. I know to my core there are few happy endings.

Yes, "The Cycle of Life" isn't for sissies. And as I often say: when things are bad, they usually get better, all but the last time. And when things are the best they can be: look out, they're all going to "hell in a handbasket," soon. Have a wonderful rest of your week!

I have a short poem called Expectations that deal with this topic. Thanks, you too.

A very well written story with vivid description and self-deprecating humour about a "what might have been"! What a shame the two couldn't reconnect. I enjoyed the snippets of thoughtful and well-composed poetry to open and close - that gave it a "universal tragedy" kind of appeal.

Thank you, Wendy, for your kind words and generous review. I just wanted to write something different and get outside my comfort zone. I don't write poetry or know the first things about it. So, I was just dabbling. LOL. I'm glad you liked it and appreciate your encouraging review and suggestions.

This is sensational, Ric! A snippet of life, but full and thick with emotion. It took me through a gambit of your interesting twists and turns of events and gave us a real look at a true personality. I love the way you write, my friend! Your work is too far and few between. I had to SIX this one! Best, JohnC

Thank you so much, John, for your extra special six-star review and heart touching words. I wanted to get outside my comfort zone and do something a little different. I'm glad you liked it. And I hope you liked it at least half as much as I did your story of the month. Congratulations again, for your well deserving winner! The best back at you, my kind and considerate friend!

I so wanted this to be true (except for the separations and Lori's death). It was such an imaginative way to get to know a girl. Also I liked the poetry at the beginning and end. Very effective. Kate xx

It was really good to see something different, and I did indeed think it was outstanding (apart from your strange comma use [but I have decided we should agree to differ on that and I shouldn't knock a star off for something so petty])
reply by the author on 11-Oct-2022
I say things different from most, so many times my commas make readers scratch their heads. But I agree with the detective writer, Lawrence Block, who says, I put commas where I think they should go, and I know what and how I'm trying to say something, so how can anyone else tell me I'm wrong? LOL. It's a pet peeve with him. But with me, please, you can always point out anything you think should be written another way. I need all the help I can get. Hugs, Ric :-)

I ALWAYS enjoy your story-telling. Your descriptions are so vivid and colorful. I can still remember guys in "multicolored, pastel geometric-patterned Jams, side-split just below the knee." But my guys were on the New Jersey shore. I know some of this story is true and some is fiction. I like the mystery of guessing which is which. Great story.

Thank you so much, Lorraine, for your kind and generous review. Yes, as with most fiction, there is some truth in this story. But if I told you what was and wasn't, I might spoil the whole story. Of course, sometimes, writers hide the whole truth behind a fictional label as not to share personal secrets. LOL. But, once we tell something, it isn't a secret anymore. I'm glad you liked it. I appreciate YOU!
