This is a great story and ballad type poem. One of your best, yet. Good characterization of Sam: thoughtless and selfish, quick to anger. No wonder his girl took on another. Sam deserved his fate.

Hi, Carolyn.
This is a great poem and justice is served. Your characters are well described, showing the arrogance and entitlement of Sam. Not even a letter for ten years, expecting to find his wife waiting for his return. Great story woven in a poem.
Bye
Rosalyne :)

Carolyn, Good! He deserved to die struggling for his last breath. This is a great little story within a poem. I enjoyed the read. Nice job. Carole

This has great rhyme and meter. Brought back to mind the old ballad of Tom Dooly. Ten years without a letter? What a jerk, hope the buzzards feast on his bones.

HaHaHa... what a great review. Hadn't thought about Tom Dooley but I guess all play out in a similar way. If justice gets its way.

Carolyn;
excellent imagination that is very inventive and creative in your writing you are so resourceful and thinking up this storyline and tell that I must agree this is very impressive.
You double rhyming couplet quatrains are done very well and neither forced nor labored and helped with the rhythmic flow with seem to flow smoothly throughout the writing.
The imagery both descriptive and expressive are also unique and distinct: "No water to quench is hell-bent tongue/no cool air to breathe into his parched lung/The posse drew closer, but they were too late/Sam wouldn't hang, some justice can't wait".
A great tale with a justifiable ending and I must admit I was very much entertained by reading this whole tale.
Thanks for sharing and posting and may all your endeavors be as good as this one.
Alex

This work has reached the exceptional level

Quite the story in a poem you've got here. Too bad Sam and his wife couldn't have talked somewhere along the way. Might have saved three lives.
Well done with your entry, Buck

This is so very good. The rhyme and meter flowed smoothly off the tongue. And it gets better each time you read it.

I feel Sam was perhaps a little tough on his lady, she did after all wait years for his return. But I did enjoy the final two lines and I believe justice was applied.

A most enjoyable poem
