This is a very accurate story, a story deserving of a six if I hadn't run out of them. Seventy years ago, I had a teacher like her in country school. For three years she told me I could never hope to be more than a maid. Two first graders weren't potty trained and I had to scrub up their pee. I reached fourth grade, and my wonderful teacher said I could be anything. I was reading in two weeks and graduated college. My teaching career was dedicated to being a good teacher, although I know a few times I became discouraged and wasn't as kind as I could be.

Your true story broke my heart. I was a teacher's aide when I attended college and worked in the Title One program. Both of the certified teachers who supervised my work were incredible. I can't imagine listening to a teacher berate an underachieving student. I pray she got fired eventually. Your story caused reaction so that is a sign you wrote it well. gayla

The way the children were treated made me ill, those children had learning disabilities and who knows what type of home life, and to come to school and be made to feel worse is so sad and wrong. A teacher can encourage children, a little bit if love goes a long way.

I can't imagine how a teacher like that has a job. I've been far removed from public schools for a long time. Our four grandkids are homeschooled and in a Christian co-op school. They are in the best environment we could hope for.

I can see exactly why you were discouraged by this woman and I agree with you. She should not be teaching students reading or any other subject if she's going to downgrade them and call them stupid that is a very bad teacher. When my oldest daughter was a freshman in high school. She had an English teacher that told the class straight up. That half of the class would fail his English class. She was so determined that she was gonna make him give her a straight a in his class that she worked her fanny off to prove that he had to do that and he did. He gave her a straight a.

I think that anyone who wants to be a teacher, should have certain qualities, such as patience, empathy and courage, to name a few. Your story brings this out very well; it also shows that one must have a love for it. I have tutored teenagers in tge past who had problems reading, it was amazing to see how they blossomed once they got it. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with you. I would have put a tape recorder in her room . Let her speak for herself in her own words to the principal. Drop the tapes off in the mail. No muss no fuss. Us back seat drivers can offer grand advice. Though useless now. :-)

How very sad. Some people should definitely not be teachers, and I hate to think how many children she crushed during her career. Who knows what they could have achieved with someone who believed in them and always found a way to encourage them. Best wishes for the contest.
