I read that Kennedy asked : how many could die if they went to war with Russia ...
In the many hundred thousands.. maybe more was the reply.
Kennedy didn't think such a massive loss was acceptable and against all the warmongers around him , he decided that diplomacy was the right way.
Under pressure, he allowed the Bay of Pigs invasion which was a disaster and an embarrassment for the USA.
Russia in the end stepped back and dismantled its missiles.
Kennedy was also against entering the Vietnam war... again he was pressured
He paid with his life his opposition to warfare.
He was the last great politician in your country ..
