If only the really bad stuff could be erased from our memory the 1st day of every year. Very hopeful message, I too hope to be wiser. This is a beautifully written, thoughtful poem. Chloe

And wishing you the same. It looks like a great start for you, and you gave us a great poem to start. Very uplifting, and I love how you used three areas to give us hope for the year - words, paths and hopes. Thank you for sharing this.

How important it is to let the past die, and what a better time to do this than at New Year. A time full of opportunity and promise. We really need to let the past go, as you have so eloquently written in this wonderful poem.

It's always a delight to read your poems, Diane and this one is no exception.
The poem opens with "A New Year beckons: "
The poet reminisces the past wrought with betrayal and failed expectations. The avalanche of the distressing past is too overwhelming even with the advent of the New Year. However, she is determined to move on for
"Only a fool would stay
Manacled to the past"
Yes what wisdom. The poem ends with a resolution not to repeat the mistakes of the past, to be "a fool...once again."
Great read.

But it always does for the unabashed optimist. Wonderfully done. Your words and phrasing are so poignant and descriptive. I really like this work. JeffreyStone

You have captured beyond measure the true meaning of letting go of the past and how the past is simply made up of a conglomeration of tangibles (or intangibles in matters of the heart) that cannot be changed. It is eerily ironic that I chose this poem to review, my first of this New Year without knowing its topic. Perhaps it is an omen for me that "Words not yet spoken ... Paths not yet taken ... Hopes not yet dreamed" are the reason I embraced the New Year and let go of an intangible - something I could not change nor force to happen before its time and took someone's advice to just "let it happen." I am in awe that you so eloquently put into this free verse such a personal part of me, and I am sure a personal part of many others who read this and hopefully will let go of the past and not become fools in the future. Thank you - in more ways than you know.
