I've given you a six for your honesty throughout this scam.
We are plagued in the UK as well with these scams.
I was contacted by one which originated in India. It was about a debt that I was said to owe the inland revenue. I had to laugh at this because they didn't realise that Jersey (CI) is not part of UK tax system. So I played with them for a while just to waste their time.
I'm so sorry you lost money to these sods. I can imagine how you must feel. I expect that you know that there is plenty on the internet about the major scams. Worth a look. Don't worry you're not the first and won't be the last. I'm afraid I can't offer you a prayer because I don't believe in the supernatural. Mel.

This just tears at me! I'm so sorry that this happened to you.
I can't relate since the closest I got to being scammed was when I received a random phone call asking if I was on my computer (I was, but for some reason said no - I'm a bit ornery that way) I was told my computer had been hacked and needed to log in and call a number. Without thinking, I said "why don't I just call my computer department (I had just gotten off work where I would have call the computer department for everything computer related). They hung up and only then did I realized I was probably talking to a scammer.
I live in fear of exactly what you went through. Scammers are getting more sophisticated and know how to play on peoples emotions. My sister has been a victim of the "Mom, I've been in an accident and need money" scam.
You are fortunate to be surrounded by a loving family, and as expensive as this lesson was, hold onto that knowledge and appreciate the love you are surrounded with.
Wishing you peace!!
Cat

Is this for real? I can't believe this happened to you. Those guys really went for all you had. This was quite a scam. Once they had you in their sites, they wouldn't let you go. You should have filed the Scam Victims report. It's touching your family was so concerned about you. I'm sure this type of scam does happen all too often. I've learned if I see the word "continue" appear on my screen, not to do so. It leads to some kind o scam. I was almost the victim of a scam. Fortunately, my husband got home in time to scream at the perpetrator that we would cancel the check I'd already made out. No harm done, but I did have to go to the bank and get my old account canceled and set up a new one. You gave a fascinating account of how things went down. A cautionary tale for all of us, especially the senior citizens. I hope the Arc paid you well for your story. judi

It's amazing, Judi. If you read the reviews for my story you'll see that just about every one has had some sort of close encounter of the scammie kind, or their family had. I'm just grateful to have Fanstory friends like you to support and encourage me. The biggest blow was to my self-esteem. And my wife swears she is suffering PTSD over it, affecting her daily activities.

Yes, this happens all too frequently. I wish you had reported the incident. It would add to the charges against those characters when they get caught. judi

Jay, well, that is one hell of a way to get a six out of me. I sent you a private email. Let me know quickly, and I will see what I can do. I know others want to help. Don't you dare turn down good people with good intentions! Terry.

OMG! Mr. Wilson was good, wasn't he? He was a master of deceit, and kept you going for hours.

The comment, "This happens to more people than you think," would not be consoling at all. It's heartbreaking, and it makes me angry.

Well, Jay, the best thing about all of this is your family. They will get you through the dark place you're in. Be filled with that hope we're imbued with, and take it one day at a time.

They probably never will, but it would be so sweet if they caught the bastards.

Thank you for sharing such a personal story. I wish you all the best.

I feel for you. And I can see how it could happen.
We hate thieves. And scammers.
I'd like to send you a few dollars, but would you accept six stars instead?
Besides, your writing deserved it.
Good luck with "Medium' (I think that's what you told me.)

Your kindness (and of course the six stars) is worth more than money to me now. My Fanstory family is helping me restore my faith in myself. If you and/or Ben have a few prayers for my, I'll accept them humbly!

This won't make you feel any better but my mother in law was scammed for 2 grand. Same thing, clear our your account we can help you. All I can say is if someone tells you you should know better, they can go F@*k themselves. Scammers are very, very good at what they do. They play upon emotions and honestly make you feel selfish or stupid for not accepting their "help". I truly believe there is a special place in hell for scammers and hackers in hell. It happened. I'm sorry. I will pray for you. Gretchen

Oh Jay, I am bawling my head off because if I would have only written about my story, perhaps you would have seen it and it might have saved you from going thru all of this. You are not stupid. You thought you were being so careful, but these assholes are just that good. So thank you for writing this.

When I got my second iPad, I was having trouble setting it up, which is unusual for me because I am so big with technology, nobody could ever pull the wool over my eyes. I could not be scammed because I am so careful, and like you put it, Yada yada yada!!!

I called what I thought was Apple for help and they too told me I had been scammed and for the life of me no lightbulbs went off. It was ten at night and they can see there is no apple distributor in my area, so they tell me to got to the nearest Walgreens or Walmart. And I actually get my husband to get ready to take me there, and the lightbulb did go off. I called Walgreens and asked them if they had something there that made this all work, and they told me to call the cops.

I did not call the cops, but I did find a reputable number for Apple and found out this is what scammers do with the gift cards, etc...

Anyone can be scammed. My husband had his identity stolen just from using his checkbook. It was a Wells Fargo inside job, but he doesn't do anything online. He still has a flip phone in fact. So please don't be so hard on yourself.

If there is anything I can do to help. Please know that so many of us adore you and think you are so awesome.

Since my ordeal now, as soon as I think there is a chance, I google to see if there is any scams out there like that. Gosh I hate that this happened to you.

Please stay in touch and know we are all here for you. As far as not accepting help, I wish you would reconsider as I know if you could help one of your friends, you would do so in a heartbeat.

For now, I think you are even a better guy than what I ever knew you to be.
You do have my prayers and I am also sending lotsa love, a couple big hugs and many caring thoughts your way. Take care, my friend!!

Oh, God, Debi, now you have me bawling. (Well, the way men tend to bawl -- my eyes are glassy as hell!)

I will stay in touch. I think I have your email address. I just need to get away for a while. My wife and I are working on some on-line sales deals. She's setting up a separate debit account for me into which she will deposit my living expenses monthly. I'm as happy as a clam with that.

Meanwhile, your prayers and hugs and love go a long way to healing my wounds. Thank you, dear friend!

Until we see you again, and as long as it isn't goodbye.
Just see ya later kind of thing! I believe that some things happen for a reason and this maybe one of those that turns into a blessing somehow. I am not belittling the importance of this but you know me, looking for a bright side. Your wife seems like a wonderful woman. God bless you both and see ya later, my awesome friend!!

Definitely a so-long, but hopefully, a not-so-long so-long. And yes, my wife and I love each other dearly. It's just that we can't be alone together. It would take years of counseling to learn why. Again, Debbi, love you and thank you for being you!

I am so very sorry, Jay. That had to be especially painful having to go through so many hoops to enable the thieves. It is important to be upfront about this, and helpful to share your experience. I hope they print your story and write you a nice check.

Jay, I am SO SORRY. An almost identical thing happened to a friend of mind -- someone whom I thought could never be scammed I was almost scammed by someone - posing as an Amazon person. She had me sit at my computer while she was going 'fix' the problem. Something about seeing some other cursor going across my screen caused me to immediately turn off my computer! I call my computer to check everything and it was turned off in time.
I would like to help if you will give me a private email address.

By the way, good writing! I felt as if I were standing next to you. ann
