Wonderful tradition, vividly rendered. Your longing for those days is made manifest in this masterful piece. I don't recall ever having carolers--your story make me feel as if I missed out. Ironic that I who am not Christian prefer religious carols to XMAS pap music.

Thank you, Liz! I'm glad you absorbed something of the enthusiasm I tried to inject in this piece. Whether you're Christian or not, we all need a heavy dose of cheer and love for our fellow man.

Well I certainly hope this wins first place, it is SO deserving. I loved every word.
Where HAVE they gone???
I have never, not once in 63 years, heard real Christmas carolers. Never.
And I so wanted to be one! Though I can't sing. Think 'Edith Bunker.'
When I was in the Girl Scouts eons ago...my troop went caroling. This was way back in the day when it was safe for a kid to be out after dark.(We lived on an Air Force Base, high security) I assured my dad I knew where the meeting place was, and I'd walk there. I was 12, and hopelessly lost for hours.
I joined a Christmas caroling group twice in the past, in local churches. Both times, it was cancelled. Lack of interest.
BUT...I still make my cocoa exactly as you said, but add a dash of salt and marshmallows. So yummy with a winter jigsaw puzzle.
I hope you get to pin those memories/feelings down. They're priceless.
Merry Christmas,
blessings...

Oh, you had to mention Edith Bunker. Now I won't keep her voice from sliding into the chorus of every Christmas song I hear this year. You are otherwise so kind in your words. I don't know that it will do anything in the contest, but it seems to have resonated with a lot of readers, so I can't complain. You were at least a wannabe caroler, Judy. Meanwhile I will keep hunkering down with my memories. Trouble is, the older I get, the easier it is to want to take residence there. I guess there are worse places to live.
You and your hubby have a Merry and safe Christmas!

If you're memories are lovely, as these are...absolutely live there, with your beautiful roses, an earthly paradise!!!

Ah! You remember my roses!

Absolutely!!! Yours is a beautiful hobby, for you, and all that are lucky enough to be neighbors!

With faith and confidence, in love you have expressed this and tried to show us the differences in celebration of the Christmas, as you have seen and celebrated the then and to how the Christmas is celebrated, and you experience in dedicated devotees, you write so where all the Carolers have gone, carolers in different countries celebrate it differently and in some countries so poorly; well said, well done; keep writing.
