I still feel too new here to justify writing and yet I find I'm gong on and on in answering each of these well thought out essays or "op-eds"--
I'm starting to repeat myself I guess, I'm shooting for brevity here assuming you will, as a concerned and involved member, be reading the responses to the other posts in this contest...
As an aside...thanks for the larger print and bold type!
The writing prompts are repetitious.
Definition of poetry:
"literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature."
Right not there is a contest going on (or maybe just ended) to write a SIX WORD POEM.... PLEASE someone tell me how you achieve ANY of the above efined traits of poetry in SIX words... or 1-6-1 ... etcetera....
It's all too often a list of quick dash off in sixty seconds (skill requirement is the ability to count and yes you may use gingers and toes)--and pay a nominal fee and take a gamble on maybe winning...
It's discouraging and worse, for the poor reviewer to HAVE to come up with (what is it?) 150 characters worth of critique on these pseudo-poems.
"Hey Mom I have to pee."
Six words....guess it qualifies. NOW....imagine the S_T_R_E_T_C_H to come up with ANY meaningful comment...much less 150 characters.
With so many skill levels I suppose these have a place, minimally....but on the other hand there are so many TRULY talented writers--prose and poetry--who LONG to be stimulated and challenged and tested to hone their skill! I wish there were far more interesting and challenging prompts.
Setting up my own contest is cost prohibitive for me... I'd guess for many...
Your point on "double the fee of sponsoring and entering" is well taken...
I see no problem with a first, second, and third place recognition....this all twelve got a piece of the pot thing went right past me though....I can't fathom what THAT logic was...
I am a testament to all contests NOT being fixed....I was not more than 3 months in when I won a contest...and another...and several second and third's...all but one was "member dollars" but hey...it was a huge kick to win $100 cash money (okay, Visa Card but still)---and clearly I didn't win it by being well known, purchasing member dollars and promoting (I never have purchased them and never will)---or being popular (I was hardly known)--- Am I therefore the next Dickinson? HAH! Obviously lucky to have written on a topic that curried some interest and like the lottery, got more votes than the others...
I didn't LOVE that I got hate messages saying "I've been here for FIVE YEARS and have NEVER won a contest!"----I read so many more skilled than I could ever hope to be who may not have won a contest----I felt fortunate but not entitled or better or even particularly fortunate (what with the backlash)---but if a newbie can win I guess anyone can....
Popularity and friends and style that is clearly identifiable as belonging to a particular poet? That's all in the mix...no one need apologize for having worked to establish a style, grown a fan base, and win contests. FLip side? Noody should be allowed to lobbyy in anonymous comments about one or more contest entries AGAINST a contest entry --- (Yes it happened to me...and it was because the offender said "I hope this isn't who I think it is because....."----Guess what?
I wasn't who he thought I was... BUT even if he "guessed" correctly---it should never be allowed --this blackballing of a poem because it "may" be someone...
One warning and then out. My suggestion. Same with sut and paste reviews. One warning and then out. Non-refundable membership if you break the rules...
Common courtesy and the tone and manner with which we all critique goes a long way....
I welcome suggestions for edits and such. The really great reviewers never say "This stinks, you have to learn how to spell."---They pointn out what they enjoyed, how it affected them, then "suggest" perhaps another look at a given line for adherence to count for a given form, or "did you mean "their" or "there"?
Polite, helpful, kind... Same message different tone (and maybe motivation)--
Cheating is an issue...but for every resriction placed there is another way around....I have been solicited for votes for a contest from poets I've never even reviewed...
AND---full disclaimer...while I KNEW from the start soliciting votes was against the rules...I did NOT realize suggesting a poet read one of my poems was also against the rules.... I do now... I haven't located where that is posted but Ive read it on the forum...
One site I was on had a "return review" requirement. I can see poets heads exploding as I type this....BUT...while you were allowed two posts per day, you could NOT post until you first acknowledged a review (even with a thank you) and SECOND...reviewed one for one....if a poet reviewed two of your poems you HAD to return the favor and review two of his or hers BEFORE you could post. Strict?
I guess....but it eliminated any need for promoting or solicitations....
I have won or placed in a few contests and gotten not one congrats from anyone. When brand new I didn't even notice this was an option...then when I did I felt kind of sad nobody said "good job"--now I make an effort to send a "congrats" to winners.... I'm sure I miss a lot as I'm not on all the time...but it is a good point and just plain good sportsmanship!
Warts and all, I don't regret signing on for membership--I'm learning of new writers each time I'm on--I have a little fan base and I try to enjoy by time here---taking the wins and losses in stride, hoping to grow as a writer and a person with each interaction.
There is a core of really nice people who care and who write and review with seriousness and courtesy that is missing on some sites altogether... I'm a glass half full kind of gal and I think kindness begets kindness...and for those who
can't be reached....well, there is that "block" option!

I don't regret signing up for membership either. I have been here for ten years and I have enjoyed it very much.
Yes, I agree with you also about cheating, it happens so many ways. I think cutting and pasting reviews is also a form of cheating.
I do have only one or two members that congratulate me on a regular basis and I appreciate that very much.
I also welcome suggestions for my work and most all of them are very helpful and the reviewers are very friendly.
I decided to use the bold type because many of the readers have problems seeing, just as I do.

Hi Bill,it was so good to see you in my pm my sweet friend...my complaint is the way they count the reviewers...they don.t give you all the reviews you receive...and everyone is different...when I told Brooke about it....she said it was wrong as well...count how many you receive....and how many they give you...the rankings are truly fixed....and when I told Tom ....I got some of the stupidest reasons you ever heard....I hope everyone on here reads this....so very true...very well written you...and a great message....love Linda...xxoo

You know, I've never paid any attention about getting credit for all the reviews that I'm supposed to receive. Thanks for telling me about that. I'll definitely start checking that out.
I don't think either one of us spends much time anymore on Fanstory, do we? I'll drop by every now and then to see if there's anything that I want to join in on. When I saw this one I jumped on it because I've got a lot of complaints I wanted to write about. This has been one of the longest contests that I've ever joined. I won't do that again.
I'm really glad that you liked it, that means a lot.

Hi Bill, the best way to count them is to go back in your portfolio...count all the reviews you got from each poem from the 1st of January...until now...then go to your rankings...where you are on the list....they give 5000...then add all your reviews with it...and see how short you are in reviews...and that is just wrong....when i counted my 6 reviews from my first six poem...I was shorted over 300...but everyone is...just not the same amounts...some get more for theirs...some get less...I had been talking to Brooke about it...she counted hers...and said it was wrong to do that...so truly the rankings are fixed...please count yours when you get time...I would like to know what yours come up as...they tell people you get more reviews if you pay more...but what they don't tell you...is they don't all count...that's sad...check out other people too...just go to their portfolios...

Thank you very much my friend for your excellent review, I really appreciate it. I totally agree with you, there is a great deal of favoritism here and we definitely don't get our money's worth. But, all we can do about it is complain when we get the chance.

I doubt if you know me until now, but when I run out of 6 star ratings, I add my own SOMO to 5 stars to let the writer know that their piece is above all the ratings that I can give. Sometimes you use your last 6'er and wham, the next poem/prose hits your heart or fills your mind with solutions to problems, lifts your day out of a mud hole or simply is a piece of beauty. I cannot let these ones slip by without the recognition for a piece that is well done, having it's moment of praise.
Good luck in the contest, you have brought up serious, pushed-aside, no one will notice, issues. You have brought back the awareness of the incidental, same name winners being repeated far too frequent. I noticed this years ago and kind of brings a question to mind. LOL I can't remember the last time I saw a post by you to tell the truth. I have been here since 2004 and seen a lot of changes. Hello Bob.Thanks for your excellent review, I really appreciate it. I don't do much writing anymore due to some health issues and old age is starting to kick my ass. Thanks for asking my friend.

Geez, you just deflated my balloon! I'm new here, and I thought I'd found the greatest addiction since alcohol! I have entered the maximum allowed contests nearly every day, and I have won three times and also won a few other honors. So it's not impossible to win if you're new. You just have to write something interesting on the spur of the moment, like I do. Haha. I don't ever want to become bored with Fanstory.

Hello Lou and welcome to Fanstory. Please continue doing what you are doing. I, by no means, wish to let the air out of your balloon. I've been here 10 years and I've seen many changes, some for the best and some not.
As I said in my last paragraph, this is the best writing site by far without a doubt and it does become addictive. So please keep writing and enjoying yourself for a very long time here at Fanstory.

Thanks for replying. I can imagine in ten years it may become boring, but I love how it's all set up. You kind of have to work hard to promote yourself, especially for folks like me. I decided I'm not going to join anything that costs money, because I have to save to get my books self-published. Here, I can help out giving reviews and be rewarded for it.

Thank you Diane, I appreciate your informative review. We both have been here long enough to know how the system works. And, I think we both also understand that it is what it is. We may slip a few changes through occasionally, but very few. So, we either accept things the way they are and continue on or simply leave. Personally, I don't think I would ever do that unless health issues forced me to.
