What a great story Harry, I was born a redhead, and when one is a little different, you become a target for what is considered 'normal', that's the way humans are, everything but what God wants us to be, I was good at sport most of my life so that overcomes a lot of things, so your grandfather was right, just be better than your competitors. But mind you, that's not right either, loving is a learnt art, most don't do, beautifully written Harry, blessings Roy

I enjoyed this very compelling story. Many children have things they are embarrassed about, or can't do, but they give up and never put up a fight for themselves. You were a brave young boy and man, and your grandfather was wise. You story is interesting and inspiring.

OH, if so many more of today's youth would heed and understand your story... they'd rather take such as a reason for 'baby' or 'special' treatment or, better yet, as a reason they should be given special privileges and such or even a 'leg up' over others because of it.... sigh. :( A wonderful story of overcoming obstacles we all must face... well written, sir! ;) Thanx for sharing! ;) Yvette

At first, your story reminded me of my firstborn, being 19, and having my son somewhere else instead of with me. We, too, were in the Air Force in Amarillo, Texas, and later at McConnel AFB in Kansas. But when you got to the saying, "Can't could never do anything" my life with my father kicked in.... I've gone through a lot of hell in my life and just kept walking because I refused to say I can't.... my father looked down on me because I was a girl.... and I refused to bend. We have a lot of similarities, my friend. Including Rockford..LOL
