Sally, this was a well thought out piece that pulled on the young adventurous heart, the caring family member and a wise loving mother. I was there at the dinner table watching it all. Enjoy your six shower. ~DD

This was a great story, Sal. I loved the way the little girl packed. Seems she was a responsible 8 year old after all. What really took me back was your use of the word Coca-cola. That reminded me of my grandparents. We visited them every Sunday and 3 o'clock was Coca-cola time. Thanks for the flashback. I loved the way the mother handled this situation. Great job.

Thank you so much for the kind review and comments. Now I know for sure I am old enough to be your Mom. Oh dear...
I guess the Coca-Cola gave me away. So glad you liked my true story.

What a heartwarming and well-told story this is! Clearly your mother's loving nature, despite her daily stresses in supporting your then recently fatherless family, set the example for the caring person you have become. Even your plan to run away was altruistic, as you thought doing so would lighten her burden. Her gentle kindness prompted you to stay long enough to realize how much you would have been missed, thus turning a potential trauma or even tragedy into family unity and gratitude. Your then sixteen-year-old brother's willingness to contribute to the family's support may later have been a factor in your recognition of Jackson as the soulmate you needed (and still have). Superb by all measures. Six stars are not enough for this one.

You are most welcome, Sal. Your wise mother must have come from a loving home environment herself. Our society needs such examples, so we pass on far more love than hate to later generations.

What a good memory you shared, Sally. I enjoyed reading it. It was written in a great POV. I could see everything you mentioned. What an understanding mother you had, too. She used reverse psychology and it worked. The Barbie reference ties it all together. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Jan

This story seemed to say just what a little girl might say if planning on running away. If everything was as good with mother, sister and brother as it seemed why was she wanting to run away? I noticed father was not mentioned in the story. Thanks for sharing, God bless always.

Thank you, dear George. I am glad you could appreciate my true story. I do mention my parents were divorced. My mother raised me single-handedly most of my life. My dad was an alcoholic. He abandoned us all when I was very young. My mom worked very hard to raise our family and to provide just food and covering. I miss her much and the wonderful mother she was.

This made me cry, it is so beautiful. I know just how that little Sally felt. Your mom was dear to you...not yelling or telling you you were stupid for wanting to run away. And you were so sweet - Doritos crunching. Barbie, check, clean underwear, check... oh, my what a child you must have been. Thank you for sharing this dear, dear story!

Thank you so much for the outstanding review and sweetest comments. My mom was a gem. She really was a loved all of us. She worked sun up to sundown to provide for us after divorcing my alcoholic father. I actually thought I was helping by having one less mouth to feed. So you liked this.
    All my best,

Your mother was a wise woman, and handled the situation beautifully. I'm wondering why you wanted to leave? Just a feeling of wanderlust? This is such a cute story, Sally. I enjoyed reading it. I hope there will be more like it.

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind comments. I appreciate the encouragement. I alluded to the fact that my parents had divorced and my brother lived with us and worked a job. He was only 16. He helped support us as we were barely getting by. We ate a lot of breakfast for dinner because it was cheap, too. I wrote this from my eight year old perspective and my solution to support myself by myself. Love and being needed was the underlying theme for keeping me from leaving.

I see. I like breakfast any time of the day or night, and frequently have bacon and eggs for supper. Sometimes, cereal. I guess it's a Southern thing. lol

Hi Sal,

Awwwww, this is such a cute story. Mom was wise, wasn't she? Not to argue with you, but to keep inviting you to continue enjoying your home and family life. This is very well written, as always, Sal. Thanks for sharing and best of luck in the contest. Jan

I'm sure everyone who reads this will remember the time they "ran away" - usually around age eight. In my case, my parents helped me pack, then sent my sister to follow after me as I made it all the way to 63rd Street (we lived on 61st) before turning back.

This is so Norman Rockwell - I love it, and the glimpse into familial ties and the mind of an 8 year-old it offers. It practically defines "home". Absolutely deserving of my last six.

Thank you, Mark Valentine. A six from you is a true compliment. I am so glad you enjoyed it and that your sister followed you at your parents request to make sure you would still be here today. I can see you trudging along in mind?s eye.
Thanks again, for the outstanding review and encouragement!
