The homes of rich and poor both hide abuse and in those days it wasn't even considered abuse, necessarily. Just disciplining unruly wives and children.

Well, that's an arrogant SOB, isn't he? Love the courage these women exhibit throughout the piece. The entire write is smooth and well pace with excellent dialogue and insight into their world. How about this? Mildred has more courage now because all the influences that made her timid do not yet exist here, so she is how she might have been had she not lived that life. In other words, she's been born again in a way. That shows the real Mildred was always inside her, but never learned how to be herself, due to life experiences in the 21st century. Back in time, she's now free to be herself, and she likes it! She'll be a big help to the suffragetes. :)

What a big bully! I guess women had no defense back then. You did what your husband wanted or else. The only lucky ones were the ones who married kind gentle men. On two occasions I have interceded between a bully and a female victim and both times they cowered away when they saw my reaction to their bullying. LOL I was filled with rage both times myself! Mildred reacted quickly and it surprised the
Vice Admiral so he withdrew from the situation. Now the young Tommy must face him alone. This is probably going to touch on many areas where women suffered. Those suffragettes' were very brave to stand up for women's rights. Well done Sandra. :) Nancy

No, they didn't. I researched the law on this, and was amazed to learn that men were allowed to hit their wives up til the 1970s! That is dreadful! A great chapter Sandra, which included hints of suspense, some surprises and so many emotions such as anger, fear, disbelief as well as a demanding attitude. It was a delight to see Mildred stand up to Glady's husband- he may have an important sounding name and family history but he is an arrogant idiot in my books. He definitely needs some shaking up. And poor Tommy, he seems to be stuck in the middle, as they say. It is his father's wealth that gives him status, but I suspect he would rather protect his mother. What a dilemma? I eagerly await the next chapter. Thanks so much for sharing my friend, hugs from across the ocean.
