Fascinating reading, with good suspense and a great hook to have readers clamouring for more.
She made the sign of the cross[, and] then reached for the knob.
She waited for a reaction; and when none came, she smiled with satisfaction.
(The conjunction "and" is not necessary following a semi-colon.)
She noted it was set at [seventy-two] degrees.

Hmm. It seems like Mrs. Findley did not run across Casper the Friendly Ghost. :-)
You did a really good job of writing this chapter and leaving the reader in suspense.

Hey Bev,
Oh, very good job on this one! Kept the creep in creepy, for sure! I grew up in a very old town in New Jersey and we had several houses reputed to be haunted, one called the Hermitage. Very scary stuff.
Very enjoyable chapter, my friend.
Hugs,
Gayle

Hi Writingfundimension,
By the sound of it, the priest needs to call in an exorcist sharpish. He's got something really nasty infesting his Rectory.
Good hook at the end there, now we await the next installment to read what has terrified the dog and the housekeeper.
Hopefully she's suffered nothing fatal.

Hello, Patrick. Thank you so much for the great review. Yes, an exocism is planned down the road a bit. I really appreciate your support! Just curious, have you ever witnessed one?
Warmest regards, Bev

Yes, scary. There were no 'manifestations,' but some very strange things happened during the service. Things broke, fell down or moved. The temperature went down - altough that might have been psychsomatic, there was apparently no actual change in temperature. Normally an exorcist doesn't take company with him, as there is a risk to the 'assistant' but on this occassion he needed someone to carry some of the 'equipment' and hold the book. The preparation included making a full confession beforehand, followed by my performing a rite of penance, and then absolution. Plus I was warned to focus my thoughts on the things I was carry and 'pray, pray, pray. Don't think of anything, don't react to anything, focus on praying.'
As I said, scary. Ghost busters it was not, but the 'rite' involved candles, readings from the Bible, sprinkling with holy water - lots of it - and the invocation of Christ's help in overcoming the evil present. It was really quite simple, very quietly delivered, with no big movie style drama, just a 'spiritual' cleansing of each room and everything in it.

Hi, Patrick. Thanks so much for sharing this event with me. It is as you say, very essential that the thoughts not wander during the ritual. Apparently, the most exorcisms peformed by the Catholic church, according to the writing of a priest who was recently trained in Rome, take place in Italy. The thinking is that it is because of curses and satanic worship (which the freemasons have been accused of). I do know that Padre Pio had quite a few go-arounds with demons and they were quite violent in nature. I think that the energy that we call demonic is an energy that consists of many elements and is fed by belief. Anyway, I'm going on here. Thanks again, Patrick.

One reason they try to exclude anyone under 30 from such rituals ... The mind is too easily distracted.

If you have access to an UK "Book of Common Prayer" (1662 version) try looking up the Service of Comminations - otherwise known as 'Laying a curse' or the Invocation of God's Wrath upon unrepentant sinners.

Thanks, Patrick. I do have the Catholic rite for exorcism, very fascinating reading. Amazing how some of these guys can keep this up for hours. And you're right about the age. I'm not sure I could keep focused that long with the kind of pressure applied. Thanks again! Bev

Oh goodness, I am so not good with the scary stuff. This scared the daylights out of me. Thank goodness its daylight.
Wow. Well penned as always, though I am always impressed with your ability to hold the reader captive as we read.
Great cliff hanger, my friend.
Thanks for sharing an exceptional work.

This is superb descriptive writing, Bev..
I would happily read on if you'd written
more - but have chosen to leave us hanging
in suspense - I hope the housekeeper
survives.
You're such a natural at painting
the scene and showing actions that make
the story flow so easily.
I guess I've said just about everything there is to say about your work -- so I'll let the six speak for itself.

this is very well written, writingfundimension, you did a great job writing this chapter where the rectory's housekeeper battles what she thinks is a ghost to get into the rectory and then is attacked and thrown against the closet. will father brian make it to her in time?
