That is such a heartbreaking poem, Robert. But so many ex vets are still living their war. Now they are home, many living on the streets and the people just pass they by with looks of disgust on their faces. THESE MEN PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR THOSE AROGANT PEOPLE!! They deserve so much more than a cold doorway to sleep in or park bench, a rubbish bin for their food source. And men and women are still going out there to fight for their country. It makes you wonder why, when they see their fellow vets sleeping rough, why they would bother. It happens here in the UK as well. Excellent poem again, my friend. Well done. :)Sandra xx

    Hello Sandra.
It's good to hear from you. I hope you are doing well. I appreciate your personal and fitting comments about how veterans are often perceived and treated. It is clear you have compassion about these individuals and I appreciate that. It is a shame what society often expects from some people. I know some that say send them off to war, but don't bother me with any problems when they come back. That is untenable. Thank you for your positive and complimentary words. I appreciate your input.

This is a powerful portrayal of the struggle of many veterans. It's a poignant tale of the tragedy of war and the scars that often never heal.

I particularly liked how each verse adds weight and storytelling value, building to a feeling of despair. The final words, "Don't know if he can carry on," define the hopelessness many feel.

You've shown skill in the words you've chosen and the creative and intriguing poetic form you've developed. This is excellent writing, Robert! Kudos! - Jamison

What a fun Cube16. You have said it all in this eloquent poem about the sad consequences of being in a war. Wars do us no good, only harm. I feel very sorry for these poor young men.

I might right one, soon.

Well done.

Beautiful tribute to our veterans. They have given so much to keep this country free and safe and we don't do nearly enough for them. If you see a veteran tell them thank you, buy them a meal. If you can donate or volunteer do that. If you can't do any of that, you can pray. Thanks for sharing.

    Hello Marilyn.
Thank you for the kind words about this tribute poem. I have published a veteran's day poem each veteran's day for about the last 15 years. Being a veteran, I pay attention to veteran problems and issues. Some guys coming back have difficulty adjusting. Those are the ones we need to help. I'm not sure we do enough.

War changes people's outlook on life as seeing the death of close friends scars the heart forever. Surviving war is just the start of the journey back to normality and many suffer flashbacks. Your poem revelas the suffering here Robert, I always loved your inventive form, love Dolly x x x

    Hey Dolly.
William Tecumseh Sherman was the famous union general who gave a speech after the civil war and his speech began with "War is hell." There are few other words that so aptly describe what war is. Many men have a great deal of difficulty rejoining society. Tomorrow is our veteran's day holiday which was originally the Armistice Day After World War One. Veteran's day is when we celebrate the living veterans. Memorial day is the memorializing of all deceased veterans. Thank you for your kind words and I appreciate your complimentary words about the style of the cube16.

Yes Robert, peace negotiations began at 11am on 11th November 1918, and this is Armistice Day.

Yes, there are many reasons for homeless and hopeless vets, as there are for non-veterans. And those who were drafted to fight, not for the protection of their country, and those who chose to join and fight for other reasons than protection of country. It is very complicated.

Well crafted.

    Hello Lance.
Thank you very much for your positive review concerning the structure of the poem. I appreciate knowing your personal opinions about how we treat veterans. I actually have friends who are still being treated for Agent Orange health issues 55 years after they were exposed to it in Vietnam.

It's so sad what many of our veterans have gone through when they bottle it all up inside. Great job depicting the changes that one experiences from the beginning until one has served their time. It's not over for them when it's over.

    Hello Lana.
Thank you for your review and your personal comments about the experiences of the veterans that seemed to lose something after they serve and come back home. We just need to help them adjust. Most veterans don't have a problem but some do. I appreciate your complimentary words about the progression in the poem itself.

    Hello Regina.
Thank you very much for your positive and uplifting review. I'm encouraged by your words. We do have a problem in our country and citizen organizations are doing much to care for them, but we need intervention by the government because these guys lost their way while serving on active duty. Thank you very much for your kind words and your six-star award.
