This is a very sad poem Wendy as grief can be consuming and the night feels like it is closing in on us. You captured the sorrow in this poem, love Dolly x

Having lost a loved one fills us with horrible grief. The loneliness is unreal. Eventually we realize that person is still with us in our hearts, and we'll be reunited with them in heaven. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck with the contest.

Most of us have lost a loved one, and this describes the feeling well. The picture you chose is perfect. "Death's cold night"... so true! Good luck in the contest

An excellent 3 Line Poetry contest. A very accurate description of the feelings that overtake someone after the loss of a loved one. The picture and colors add to the atmosphere. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

This haiku contained all the necessary elements for me. You had the perfect balance, the nature images in the shadows and the winter cold, and you connected the images to human emotions of grief and loss. Winter is that classic symbol of death, so well chosen. I would maybe try to come up with a more specific image to sharpen and elevate the feel of the image, something like snow covering the spring flowers, or icicles hanging in the moonlight, something like that. estory

Thank you for a thoughtful review. While the night of death is cold, it is not specified to be winter in this poem. In Australia most of us never see snow in winter, nor icicles, so snow would not be relevant, and I chose the image because it was blurred, not sharp, as grief is different for each, not a simple shape but a blur of emotions and feeelings. Hope that clarifies. But thank you for thinking so deeply about it! I appreciate that.

Yes - loss in our lives, especially personal loss impacts us powerfully - well documented here in the appropriate choice of words and language 'shadows shroud his grief.'

"The heartache of bereavement ...
Loss" Oh, how so sad.
"shadows shroud" Good employment of alliteration.
"death's cold night surrounds" Good use of dark personification.
May the speaker have hope and hang on for a brighter tomorrow.
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you very much for your insightful review - greatly valued. I wrote this one thinking of my brother-in-law, and he is gradually moving towards a brighter tomorrow. Thank you.

This is likely true more times than not, but the only loss I felt such a loss is with my dog, holding him when he was laid to rest. I'm odd that way. Hardly shed a tear in losing mom, dad and three sisters. Wonder why?

Sometimes a dog is closer than family, not only with distance, but a dog is ever present in our daily lives, whereas other outside family members are not. (It's actually the same with me. I am sure I would experience such devastating loss more about Sunny than about family who live thousands of kilometres away and are rarely in contact.) The poem is for loss and grief whether about a person or a dog, and that's why you can identify with such grief about Buddy. Thank you for reviewing. I value it.

Again, you never cease to amaze me. I know you write poetry, but every time I read some, I'm astounded. This was start and real. The emptiness he feels evident in his surroundings. Beautifully written. Gretchen

Thanks so much for this wonderful review. I don't write much poetry, but when I do, I like it to have impact. Your comments are a great encouragement, as are the six stars. Thank you so much.

Very moving, Wendy, and you have depicted grief and loss very well.
I appreciate your characterization of death as a "cold night" surrounding an individual. Very apt.

Thank you for sharing!
Best wishes!
fondly,
diane
