Huntington's disease is rare, but terrible and deadly. It's ironic, in a way, because I received some "disappointing" health news today and since then have read post after post about disease and death. Thank you for highlighting this disease to many who probably have never known of it.

Jim, I am sorry that your own news is disappointing. I wish you well.
Thank you for the review.

I heard from someone I may be doing outpatient treatment, so I hope that news is true!

I had a biopsy done on a small growth and the doctor said it had to come out. All my life I dodged the Big C and am not worried because I knew I'd be with The Lord and my wife. But, miraculously, it seems to be getting better on its own, so I'll just await the doctor's decision.

Bless you. I will pray that all goes well.

I read your story and my heart goes out to you.
I am not sure about the way it was written...
Somehow letting the reader know that this is about your husband late in the story doesn't work well because the build up to that point is not strong enough. And you bring your brother into your story to let us know it is your husband.
I think your story idea is good but needs a bit of tweaking to make is great.

Thank you however, I totally disagree. You miss the point completely and apparently are the only one. It is about the emotion of the moment. One goes from a matter of collecting facts about the disease, then having to say it out loud the first time. My brother called last night to see if I was ok.

You did a phenomenal job describing the emotional thoughts and considerations of a person who finds out their husband's diagnosis, and must care for a patient with Huntington's disease. Your well chosen words leaves the reader feeling the burden of such a responsibility. This brief story is powerful. Best wishes in the contest.

It is very difficult when we have a life-changing disease that comes along that changes all of the things that we've known before. We can also have life-changing problems with falls and different things like that as well and that changes the way we behave as well. I wish you the very best with your husband, and I pray that you will be able to be the caregiver that you have to be. Patricia

Mary. As all of us here on FS are, sorry you have to cope with the ordeal and your husband is suffering through it.
God works in strange ways, but there is a plan. Please keep the faith. We are all praying for you both.

It is hard to know what to do or how to react when a diagnosis like this is given. So much to prepare for, so much worry. You do a great job of putting us in the moment and the mind of the caregiver when that diagnosis is first given. What is ahead and how do to cope? Who do you turn to for support?
Well done. Good luck in the contest.

Hello Mary,
I 'm so sorry that you and your husband are having to deal with this. I don't know anything about this disease, but I will research it after I write this. I'll certainly keep both of you in my prayers and ask the Lord to give you wisdom and peace as well as healing. I hope that you will keep us updated as to his condition, and yours for that matter. I know that you have the support of your FS friends. God bless you both.

Blessings and prayers to you as you begin to deal with this devastating diagnosis. Your husband, Harvey, must be beyond the ability to process all of this right now. It's an inherited disease. Has he the added grief of watching someone in his family deal with Huntington's? At first, I thought the font size was uncomfortably large. Once through your emotional post, I realized that it reflected the enormity of this life-changing diagnosis!
As an RN I've cared for patients with Huntington's. While there is currently no cure there has been progress in effective medications to help improve and slow the progress of symptoms.
If you haven't yet, please have the neurologist direct you to a local support group!
Oh! How I wish this were FICTION!

Thank you for your kindness. His dad must have had it. But we only saw him once a year and not for the last two. His folks lived in Arizona. His dad was tight lipped. Harvey has Asperger's so he can at times get overwhelmed if you feed him to much information
I have not told him yet.
Thank you for the review and suggestion.

Mary, this is a well-written entry for the contest. Your technique of building the story until the words come out of your mouth is very effective writing. The sadness and compassion wash over your readers like a waterfall. Outstanding writing. Terry.

You were brave to share your pain. Saying it out loud will not make it any less hard. But, day by day conversation by conversation, you will carry less of the weight alone. I wish you all ease and joy you can manage. You are a good writer. Write, it helps.
