This story of a man who turned unimaginable tragedy into good for others stays in the mind as an example of one who triumphs over evil as he can to help others. I have mixed feelings about gun issues for a number of reasons, but I know that crazed murderers are under Satan's direct influence.

Thank you for this post.
But I'm afraid nothing will convince gun-worshiping Americans, those NRA card-carriers and FOXNews watchers. I think it would take the tenth plague where the firstborn of every family not covered by the blood is killed.
Best wishes.

Thank you Wayne. We were fortunate to change things after the first (and last - we have never had anything on this scale since), so ultimately our nation is better off for tight gun ownership laws. It?s a different situation for each country, because of differing attitudes and value systems. But for us, some good did result from this situation. Thanks again.

This is a terrible tragic story Wendy and I am glad you have not help glorify the killer by naming him here, as this is what he wants. I am not an advocate of the death penalty, but it is also tragic that people like this are allowed to live and breathe when they have caused so many deaths. A poignant write Wendy where people who never thought of themselves as heroes, come out and make a difference when tragedy strikes. A chilling post Wendy, handled with sensitivity here, love Dolly x

This true story of yours was very difficult to read as I cried through most of it...
Horrible devastating story...
All those people killed because of a jerk...and, the stupid law allowing him to buy a gun...
However, as we all know if someone wants a gun there is always a way to get one... Gun shows are a very good example.
I am from California and lived in Texas for 10 years...the laws about guns is scary... I now live in Spain...better and safer.

Thank you very much Lisa. It was a hard story to write. I am highlighting how an ordinary man could make a difference, and now our whole country has benefited from the outcome of this tragedy. I am glad you have a safer place to live. Personally I could not live where guns are the norm. Freedom is when one doesn't NEED a gun!
    Thanks again. Wendy

Superb writing, Wendy. It gave me the chills with its graphic content, especially as I am an Aussie and vividly remember the impact of this event.
A story that needs to be told. Most Americans just won't understand that gun control is possible... their country lives and dies by the gun.
I will never forget the heinous actions of Martin Bryant. I've been to Port Arthur and it is forever tainted for me with those horrific scenes... modern cruelty overlaid on convict cruelty. You don't mention the year (1996) of the massacre. Was that on purpose?
Nice to see mention of Princess Mary - I have a real admiration for her.

This is an effective phrase: 'transformed pain into purpose'. Walter Mikac is truly inspirational.

Thank you Jenny, for a thoughtful and compassionate review. I also p[articularly value the six stars, and the affirmation they mean.
I relived the horror as I wrote this, but I'm highlighting him as one ordinary person who made a difference for us all. I meant to put the year, and forgot, so thank you for that pick-up. I agree re Port Arthur, two terrible histories! So sad, for such a beautiful area.

A horrible tale - and regrettably there are more of these to hear from around the world. Out of the horror though, you pull some hope for humanity in your depiction of Walter. Thank you.
