This had me in floods of tears. I have a complicated relationship with my own father. ( I bumped into him this morning and we exchanged half a dozen curt words, having previously exchanged violence with each other).
Your writing is incredibly skilful, and appeals to the instincts which define all of us as decent human beings.

The timing of your finding this to read and your running into your dad almost feels like too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence, doesn't it? I'm sorry you've known such a hard time with him. Thank you for your beautiful words to me, though. I appreciate your generosity and warmth very much. Xo

Outstanding. Your character expression of emotion is so good. I could feel the remorse of the father as he wrote that letter. Also, the same is true for the daughter as she read it to the end.
I will keep this short story in my toolbox of writing.
Great job!! Thank you.

Please keep writing. This was a very good piece that painted the scene so very well. Heartfelt with an air of mystery that kept me wanting to read on.Very well done. Take care and have a great day.

A superb story of a young female writer attempting to acquire her father's acceptance in a field he had mastered. It seems, as I read, her feelings of his disapproval had been obsessed by her until his unfortunate death, which you so magnificently described in his final words to her.

This is a wonderful story and it touched my heart. I'm so glad Tessa's father reached out to her to help her heal. I do hope she found her muse and continued to write!

Hi Rachelle, this is so beautiful. It left me in tears. (yes, my cheeks are all wet.) It's so nice to see a sad story that has a happy ending these days, but I suppose that's what this season is all about. :)
Beautifully done :)
Susan :)

I've not known you to write much fiction, but this is very powerful. Why do those "buts" always intrude in a relationship? The father was really cruel in preventing the publication of Tessa's book and in his assessment, but he wisely recanted. Probably the book hit too close to home for him. I think it would be hard to have to work for and try to please your father. She might have chosen another publisher, but her father apparently wanted to show her off. Great ending with the father's words. His fatal illness made the relationship between him and Tessa even more intense. She has been freed to go on with her writing. judi

Thank you for this posting. Though this is fiction, I would have given anything to hand any such letter from my deceased father. He left me with so many questions.

"Now, Tessa," then inflated them with, "you know I love you," only to decimate them a beat later with, "but." [I like this line.]
