Great first line. Impossible to stop reading after that. It's easy to take life for granted. You show how fragile and transient it really is. Death is never far away and has a habit of taking people by surprise. Live each day as if it were your last. One day it will be.

LOL, your last line is just as good, "One day it will be." Thank you, Tony, for the six stars and your kind words!

Oh my God! This is scary. I'm glad you're alright again. I know what it means not to be able to breath. I had experienced many times death itself, for I suffer from chronic asthma. I had attacks which I had thought would be the end of me, even my medication didn't help. I often have to sit up two to three hours at night, coughing and gasping for breath. Thank you for sharing.

You know, Versch, I've never thought of chronic asthma as being life threatening, but that's how it can be when one hasn't experienced it. My grandson had asthma as a child, but all he needed was his inhaler when he had an episode. That would be horrible to live with when it can cause you to feel your live slipping away.
reply by Versch on 15-Mar-2022
    It feels horrible, indeed, Jay.
I have two inhalers myself but I seldom use it now. I have worked out what triggers the attacks and I avoid them: drastic changes in weather (when my chest/lungs gets chilled), and food, especially food additives and dairy is the main culprit. So everyday there is always a danger of being alive or dead.

You hang in there, pal, and keep doing the right things.

Choking is one of my biggest fears as living alone you have to make sure you look after yourself and protect yourself from accidents, but they do happen and your story is testament to that, glad you lived another day and shared your experience with us here, take car of yourself, love Dolly x

Yes, I'm definitely thinking of following through on a "first alert" type devise to wear around my neck. Thank you, Dolly, for reading my story and for commiserating.

Whew! You scared me, Jay! Thank you for this message to value life and to chew carefully. Me, I don't take magnesium because that much would really send me to the bathroom! But thank the Lord that it dissolved at just the right time!
Suggestions:
I had scrabbled to my feet (did you mean scrambled?) Scrabble=to grope for
with gidy exhillaration, (giddy exhilaration)

Thank you so much, Helen. Scrabble was intentional, but wrong. I'm changing it now. Much obliged. I didn't take the happy aspect of the movement to mind.

A very frightening experience. I do have advice for you when taking your pills: turn off the TV. Would you want an obituary to read the cause of death as he died laughing from a joke from a mindless TV show?
Glad you are still here.
I had a pill stuck a few days ago not as bad but feeling it stuck is a painful and trying to make it go up or down
Take care and best wishes
Good luck in the contest

Thank you, Mary. Who'd a thunk a sitcom could be so villainous? I appreciate your well-wishes.

A good question: "I wonder if it would do any good to call 911 if you can't even muster a syllable of explanation to them."
I had to keep reading without stopping to comment. You wrote this so well. I have to give this A+

Jay: glad you can embrace your life, one breath at a time.
You detailed your life story moment - all because you swallowed
wrong. I have a hard time with vitamin c pills. Drink loads of
water before you pop a pill. Takes practice. Glad you are back.

That was quite a horrifying experience. I'm glad you made it through. I think choking is terrifying. I remember falling asleep with something in my mouth and waking up not being able to catch my breath. So, I know exactly how you felt. Sorry, I used my last six two days ago.

At 10:18 PM, on a Sunday evening, four days prior to this writing, I was about one minute from being dead. [I'm a sucker for great first lines.]

Thank you for the compliment on the first line. I too am a sucker for them. Hey, never worry about the six stars, Amahra. I just feel privileged when people read my stuff, and people of your stature warm my cockles with a compliment.

So glad you didn't see the white light and move on into it. After a night of sneezing, my biggest pill stuck this morning but I'm getting good at getting it back up even with a swollen throat. Wouldn't it be weird to meet you for the first-time face to face at the pearly gates?

OMG, Carol, I'd love to meet you there too, but can we wait a few years? Thank you so much for your kindness!

Yeah, I have a few more good years in me. If I live as long as 3 of my grandparents, I've got almost 20 years.

Genes play a big part in longevity. But then I haven't looked good in jeans for years. Yuk-yuk!

Thank you for sharing this horrifying experience. Living alone, I have often thought of something happening to me and no one knowing it for days. I have an arrangement with my daughter that I e-mail her every morning and if she doesn't hear from me, she is supposed to check up on it.

Anne ... that is such a good idea. I think I'll start doing that with my children. Joe, who I mentioned in my story, only lives about 3 blocks away, which is why he is the designated checker. Have you considered the "First Alert" or one of that type?
reply by Anne Johnston on 13-Mar-2022
My daughter is about four hours away, but she could contact someone near me. I don't have a Lifeline, but plan to get one if my health gets so I feel I really need it.
reply by the author on 13-Mar-2022
Well, Anne, my health is fairly good. But I still choked.
