This is a lovely poem, Sally. I agree with your sentiments. I always make a fuss over any Christmas gift I get whether I like it or not. With regard to this site, there are many people here because they are learning how to write. Something to always keep in mind. Hugs, Lou

Sometimes we do things for the wrong reason, hoping, maybe fantacising, but all goes wrong when all along the real reason we should be doing is right in front of our face. Nice message

I alluded to the fantasy climbing up and up. My husband is the smiling friend. He encourages me so much and my biggest fan. Sending you my best today as always,

Dear Sally, you are an incredible writer. This poem is lovely, your words allow us to feel what you feel, just like a beautiful painting stirs us, a wordsmith like you is a thing of beauty. The very heart of you shines through. X0 Laura.

A very touching poem, Sal, and very pertinent to us writers. I don't think most of us have egos the size of some actors and actresses, but we are sensitive souls -- if we weren't, then writing wouldn't come as easily to us. Many of us are, very much, students of human nature, and if we're not careful, we can become victims of it.

At the same time, it's one of the most incredible gifts, and reliable outlets.
We do often pour out our souls, through pen, onto paper (or through the keyboard, etc.)

Rejection can be painful, and careless rejection, even worse. Your poem takes us with you, on a roller coaster of emotions.

I remember when my husband and I were mentoring and tutoring a child of about 11. He was having trouble completing his writing assignments -- but then he realized that he could write about what HE wanted; he could express HIS thoughts and feelings. I think that changed things a lot for him. Latest I heard -- I think he's pre-Med.

What a wonderful story. That's so true the power of encouraging words. I'm reading today about writers who were rejected in their first or sometimes second and third attempts to get their work noticed. The list is long. My husband is the smiling friend depicted in my poem. I don't stay discouraged long with him by my side. Sending you my best today as always with many thanks!

That's so beautiful, Sal. A loving husband is a precious part of one's life, really an inseparable part. I'm so happy to know that he's the smiling friend in your poem -- always on your side! What a blessing! Be blessed, together. Sending warm hugs your way.

This is a beautiful, moving, poignant poem about acceptance or rejection
of one's best (or what one considers his/her best at the time). Your powerful message could apply to writing--or to so much more.

Hi Sally. I agree that we must be positive in our reviews and not discourage each other from writing through our comments. Each piece offers the reviewer and the writer something. Marilyn

This poem shows a wide range of emotions (pointless to enumerate them, you know them). These are well-developed and tightly crafted. They hit their marks accurately. I am glad that the giver found a better friend in the end.

The part that confused me a bit was why was it important to be climbing up and up, and why could a riot be caused?

Thank you, Katherine. I appreciate your excellent rating and insightful review. Climbing up and up is a metaphorical image of someone who lives in the pride of perfection. Someone that can never be pleased.

The man at the bottom represents humility and acceptance. It is my sweet encouraging husband pictured at the bottom of the hill.

Thank you so much for explaining the imagery to me. I still have a lot to learn in this poetry lark.
    Have a good day, Katherine

Dear Sally, your poem deserves the sixth star for its metaphorical message and strong execution. It also posesses a literal truth.

I hope the verse wasn't inspired by your experiencing anything unpleasant on this or any other site.

In any event, it is an inspiration for all your readers to review with heart as well as mind..

Blessings Julia

Hi Sally,
Three things I can think of that are not for cowards... old age, sickness, and writing. It sounds like someone was unkind in a review. I'm sorry this happened to you, my dear. I know how you feel. I've given up writing in Fanstory various times, but I've always come back. Although I don't write as much as I used to. Unkindness leads to discouragement and distrust.
My favorite line,
"The day was sprayed with roses"
Now, I have to wonder, who was this new friend who set you back on your feet?
Hugs,
Kimbob

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind comments, dear Kimbob. My first copy editor was rough on me but I'm better now. My husband is the kind friend and also my loudest cheerleader. He has stepped in as my editor, and is also the cover designer of my novella. I know it is wonderful book and FanStory readers have given it four awards in 2019 and 2020. It is my first published work but not my last. I have three more books ready for this year. I hope you are past your discouragement and will be writing more. :)

Goosebumps! The variety of emotion takes me up the hill and down again. Thank you for suffering through rejection to continue writing the most beautiful pieces we could be blessed to read!
