Geez Louise, why? This is so wonderfully written, so evocative and beautifully descriptive - you have managed a complete story within the 100-word parameter too - very, very nicely done!

This meets the contest requirements nicely with a correct word count and a complete story. I can relate to how she feels since have quite a bevy of birds that stop by daily = tell her the good news is you will make new ones after the move (I recently moved myself) and in my case I even have some bunnies and deer that come to call. I wish you all the best in the voting and thank you for sharing it.

Lovely story. The best I've read so far. You really do achieve a sense of the pathos of the occasion. Good luck in the contest. I think this one may be a winner.

I truly appreciate your enthusiastic response to "Farewell," and your best wishes.

A very tender story torn from the pages of reality. Hopefully, your mother-in-law will make many new friends of the human variety to help console her and compensate for having to give up her house and her animal friends. Although I will admit, I much prefer the friendship and company of animals over most people I know. At least animals listen to what you've got to say (or pretend to), appreciate you and rarely talk back.
Good story, and good luck. ~Dean

I, too, find much pleasure in the company of animal friends. Thank you for sharing and your kind praise, Dean.

Lovely little tear-jerker you have penned here. I imagine many of us are caught in the dilemma of how best to take care of elderly relatives - not to mention that it foreshadows difficulties associated with our own ageing.
This cleverly touches upon just one factor that makes what seems to be a sensible decision, extremely difficult.
Good luck.

Thank you so much for your understanding and kind comments.

A poignant capturing of a moment in time that is able to address all the elements of fiction despite the austere 100-word limit. The reader contemplates the possible reasons for this farewell and empathizes with the character as she stands at the portal of this great lifestyle change.

Aww, that is really sad. My mother is getting older and she and my step-father feed wild animals out where they live in the country. I'm worried about the very thing you mentioned in your story. How can they let the animals go?

This is a great little story that I think many people will see and be reminded of their own parents. I always remember my folks as independent and giving. Nice story.

I must have accidentally given you a four. I've updated it to a 5.

Thanks, Bill, but your kind praise means more than stars.

Ah, as much as I admire her independence, her children are right. Just one fall could be devastating for a 94-year-old. The writing was very well written and it touched my heart.

It is hard thing, to give up ones home, lifestyle, liberty and independence. Is it the best thing, hard to say. It may be the safest. Touching farewell tale. Well done.
