Drastic times call for drastic measures so no, I'm not offended by your solutions to these problems. What I am afraid of is good ideas don't get very far in our country. It feels like common sense could fix so many of our problems but those in charge don't seem to want our problems fixed. That's probably a whole other story, uh?

Thank you. You are right. Good ideas don't get press.

You have not offended...this is the kind of truthful dialogue and rationale we all need to have. All of your solutions make sense...they are probably not all possible...going back to penal prisons, instead of a Holiday Inn is probably not going to happen, but you are absolutely right...Baby Steps...Can hardly wait for part III...would you please run for Congress?

Your either running for president (I'd vote for you, at least you have a plan a stand up for it) or you're committing suicide.
I agree with your plans. They are very tough and would take years to see much of a positive effect, but it's what this country needs.
I agree a million percent with your prison de-reform. Most of the ones in my jail treat it like a big party. Then they turn around and whine about not being able to see their wife and kids. I guess I've been there too long because my response to that is, "You put yourself here, you're the reason you're missing them."
They don't like to hear that.
I would add one thing to the prison re-reform. No voting rights for inmates. If they gave a damn about the law, they wouldn't be in jail.
Your thought about kids going to see their 'dad' in jail is something that I had never thought about, but it makes perfect sense. If your father was a fireman, the first thing you'd want to be is a fireman because you look up to your father as a kid. He is your image of God. So if your father is a criminal, of course you look up to him and want to be like him.
Your idea of women being more selective seems odd at first, but the more I thought about it the more sense it made. Once again, it would be a very tough road, but worth it in the end.
And I'll close my review with a little humor. If you do run for office on the plan you have laid out here, I think you should use a specific campaign slogan.
"Securng our future through Pussy."
It would be the most unique (and possibly briefest) political campaign in history.

Ha. LOL Thank you. That would be quite a slogan. I couldn't say it of TV but it's good.

Some excellent ideas and thoughts out of the box. How to implement them is another tangled problem. It would be under the state jurisdiction, each idea with partisan implications.

You are a fine and deep thinker, Lance (thanks for slipping your name in, by the way.)

cut off their sources of replacement soldiers. [Amen to that, Lancellot.]

Prisons are the original sources [Paragraph spacing error.]

no visits with none family. [is that ONE'S family?]

if you have a life sentence and are of sound mind, suicide would be a legal option for you. [This is an interesting solution to overcrowding. Also, the least likely to be permitted.]

feeling inadequate around a man smarter and more successful than her, [...more successful than SHE ("is" is implied.)]

I will encourage women not date, [This just seems awkward. Either "encourage THAT women not date", or "encourage women NOT TO date.]

must collect their checks in person, and receive their shot or patch for birth control. [WOMAN must agree with HER, not THEIR.]

I think I've offend enough people [I've OFFENDED...]

I love your ideas, Lance.

Interesting thoughts. The only thing is when it comes to single mothers the system appears to encourage this behavior Why? Because without single mothers there would be one less level of bureaucracy for the politicians to feed off of. Social services aren't really concerned with getting people off the system, only in managing it and ensuring their jobs. As to young black men and gangs, it really comes down to meaningful employment. During the 90's there was a marked decrease in the crime rate. After careful study, the bean counters found that people would rather work than steal for a living. I do agree with you that Hollywood and TV need to stop glamorizing the criminal life. Things like Orange is the New Black make prison seem like a sorority.

To many, your solutions may seem extreme, but I believe it is coming to a time for drastic measures. I think prisons have become too soft. I have worked with young offenders myself in the care setting and it is a game pure and simple. They get off all the time when guilty and are given chance after chance. They will do almost anything to gain that acceptance into whatever social grouping will accept them.

Once again I applaud the bravery and stance.

Bravo! THe situation is too far gone to do anything less than what you propose. And I am sick of coddling prisoners. In many cases, prison is more fun, more secure, more comfortable than the homes/streets the thugs there came from! Now the libs are worried about how we might have mistreated the superthugs who killed thousands on 9/11. They've pretty much ruined America by taking away consequences for actions. Is it too late? Can we handle the riots that would ensue? Would the media cooperate and not make things worse, as they always do by showing the riots and encouraging more rioters to enjoy the glamour of being on TV night and day for antisocial behavior and destruction? THe media is a large part of all our problems, siding with the libs all the time, against common sense solutions like yours. Again, BRAVO!

Thank you very much. It may be too late for a real change without something very bad happening. The media are too invested and agenda driven for the truth, unless we buy them out or hit them in wallet.

Msybe if a few top media guys were the victims of the crimes they constantly ignore or excuse... or maybe ISIS could kill a few of them or their kids in a diner here like that one islamic nut job did it in AU. Maybe when the bad economy and ridiculous regulations on businesses hits THEM... but all of that is just one big MAYBE, and there are too many of the fools anyhow. Yes, it's pretty much hopeless at this point. Sigh...

Not in the least offended. Wish I knew how to insert an audio file of deafening applause. I worked for a couple years as a nurse in a Florida prison and still don't understand why they refuse to make a prison operate like a punishment. So disgusting, big screen tv's, rec rooms, and all the other goodies you mentioned. You are so spot on with all of this. I commend you. Thanks so much for writing all of this.

I doubt you offended anyone who ever paused to think. Yes,
following your ideas is paying for life up front, not trying to finance it. Well said.

There are a few things in this article I agree with, but not very many. Changing prisons around in the way you have stated here will do nothing to stop gangs and gang violence. Most of the recruits do not come from prisons, they come from young poor people. The only way to end all of this related gangs and gang violence is too end poverty. Poverty breeds law breakers, be they white black or any other skin tone. Poverty is the reason why those neighborhoods are the way they are. Changing the prison system will not change anything at all. Only by getting rid of poverty, will you curtail the gangs. Poverty brings a lack of hope, and a lack of hope will change just about anyone at all. Only when we get rid of poverty, will we get rid of the gangs. Gangs feed on the hopelessness of people. This is a well written article, even if I don't agree with everything it is saying... John

Thank s John. I knew those of us on opposite sides of philosophical spectrum would see the causes differently.

Have you ever seen any of the Gangland series on the History channel? You would enjoy it. perhaps you can see it on Youtube.
