A very good poem. I'm not generally good with poetry so I read it twice to make sure I understood it, lol! I like the end about the straightjacket, that that's what parents prefer. This poem is something a lot of younger people will definitely relate to.

Oh yes. The straitjacket of the formal sonnets of our parents... How true this is, generation after generation. Aah, where will it all end? We can't seem to avoid that 'growing up' time in our lives, but I think the snarling paper tigers will go on, and on... Wonderful poem, Tony, Giddy

Tony, Without full knowledge of knowing who Kurt Cobain is
at all to find out the reason for this poem. At game but I don't know what he is. The rest of the piece, I gather, is about or of him. The rest of the poem at stifling And a yell for help for freedom And a willingness to fly away from the chains that are being held. That's all I could gather from the poem. Thank you for sharing am posting this.

I love the pop culture and literary allusions and how they help you convey a most thoughtful message about the nature of this father/daughter relationship. Brooke

We are indeed, a rigid generation, as was our parents, and the generation before. I often wonder if our grandchildren will brand their parents with the same hot poker; or, if somewhere down the line, letting go and trusting in a different outcome will prevail. Lots of food for thought, and a poem that many will be able to relate to.
Please accept a virtual six.

any thanks for the virtual six! I somehow don't expect this ever to change. Experience has little attraction at second-hand!

When children are young they are so much fun, but the teen years take its toll. LOL

I simpler reminder myself each morning that I was once in their shoes, it sure helped. I enjoyed the poem, it reminded me how time passes so quickly.

Time sure does slip by and takes with it our absolute certainty that we are both invulnerable and immortal!

Paper tigers- what a great metaphor for marijuana. Another fine analogy with reference to nature--cocoon and butterfly. This makes me think of Beiber and his antics right now that cost him bad press. Some say it's a stage we all go through. Wish I had a six left for you. The images and meaning are powerful as if all your work, Tony.

Thanks very much for your review and virtual six. I guess that breaking away from the role of dependant child in our youth is almost as hard as accepting it once more in our old age.

"It took time for me to learn
That she must write her own life"

That is my favorite part of your poem.
Easy flowing and nice to read.

Not sad or depressing
A great read.

Nice job

I take this to be a parent having little success with helping a child who rebels. Then the acceptance of the parent that the child has her own life and must deal with it herself and in her own way. If this is a true story, I hope both lives are getting better.

"Exotic night flowers are poisoned And enticing flames burn" are beautiful metaphors for her experience and parent fears. I also like the comparison of sonnets and free verse, to living within a ruled framework or outside of it. --Elaine

Many thanks for your perceptive review, Elaine. It was a hard time but many years ago now. She has turned out to be a wonderful woman and we are best of friends!

Dear Tony - a wealth of wisdom in this poem my friend. It reminds me of my daughter so eager and ready to fly the nest so soon in my mind, yet I let her wings test the space, and let her soar.

Much like you have in this poem - it reminds me of the role we play in our children's lives. Great images, loved the "paper tiger" imagery and the continual exploring of both sides of the equation.

Nicely done and thanks so much for sharing it.
Maureen
