It is a terrible shame when a good person believes that the only value they have is in how they are seen by some jerk who has no real understanding of the great treasure that life has bestowed upon them. Anyone who abuses their significant other, whether male or female does not deserve the happiness that other person is trying to share with them.

Everybody deserves to be treated with respect. Abusers of any description need to be thrown in jail for a while. Many thanks for the review.

This was a nice poem about a sad subject: that of a woman living with an abusive man. Written with rhyming couplets, with good rhythm and rhyming throughout the poem.

Such a good entry for the 'Love Bites' entry. You tell a good story of a woman who will, despite all the abuse, hang on to her man come what may. 'She dreams of a time when he was kine - Or was his kindness all in her mind' - good lines. Good luck in the contest. Regards Dorothy

Love is blind. It seems the more some women are abused the more they try to convince the abuser that she is worthwhile and he should be proud of her. He is as blind as she is not seeing the tree for the forest the jerk never changes. Sad . Well done. Nancy

I think some abusers know what they're doing is wrong, but they can't seem to stop, and others think they have every right. They won't change as long as they can get away with it. Many thanks for the review.

I can tell you what she was thinking; been there, done that for 20 years. Wasted my entire youth on this man and, in the end, he found someone else and cheated on me for 3 years before telling me I needed to find someone else. Ruined my family and relationships with my kids. Of course, I think this isn't the only problem here, but at least it sounds good. Your poem worked well. It was an easy read and made sense to me. Thank you for sharing.

My ex threatened to take the kids and disappear. That's why I stayed. He was never physical. He knew I could get help if he did that. In front of other people, he was a sweetheart. Many thanks for the review.

The writer delivers a message that is saddening and filled with truth. A lot of people don't know how to love themselves first. Until you are able to love yourself, you find yourself putting up with things that you shouldn't be. I hope she learns to love herself before it's too late.

This is a great poem, well written with a lot of real emotion. Until I read the footnote I thought it was autobiographical. I do not know what Dr Phil is but I suspect you have captured the moment well. Well done.

No, it's not autobiagraphical. My marriage was bad, but I was never physically in danger. His favorite was "I'm going to run off with the kids and you'll never see them again." Today he's never seen three of his grandchildren. That's what his threats got him in the long run. Many thanks for the review.

This is a poem that I can truly relate to. People say that when you love someone, you tend to neglect their flaws and focus on how much you want to be with them. Love hurts.
A great poem you've written there:) Very honest words.

Ignoring flaws isn't the same as tolerating abuse. Who doesn't have a few flaws? Love can be painful at times, but it should never be dangerous. Many thanks for the review.

Hi Mystery poet

I find your poem interesting and a great concept for the contest. It is difficult to understand this kind of thinking. Living such a delusion, what a tragedy.

Your poem tells a poignant tale and you have really got into the mind of someone who might think this way. The statistics prove that she is in danger.

You have great unforced rhyme and meter in this well thought out poem and certainly addresses the prompt. I find this one of the best I've read and wish you luck for the contest. Excellent alliteration in "lived/life", "Surviving/she", "happiness/him/he's/home", "When/wanting/wine", "time/track", ""this/things/torn/tattered" and the abundant use of assonance and consonance to complement the tone of your poem. Some very good in-line rhyme. Your poem is solid, flowing, and misses no detail. Great title and excellent presentation ... an excellent choice of image. Well done. Warmest Regards - Lovinia xoxooxox

This was very good. It certainly fits the bill for the darker side of love, too. It's subject/topic was a very sinister one--spousal abuse. This sort of occurrence happens all too often in our world today. It doesn't care to discriminate against the normal. It makes no distinctions concerning race, color or creed. Love bites hardest when you least expect it!

Nicely penned...
