An excellent essay pointing out the problem, Titan, and giving places to look for possible answers. The too-simple solution would be to restrict usage of these items. And remove them completely from the possession of those who are not mature enough to use them properly. Parents are supposed to PARENT. That's why so many bullies exist. There's no fear of punishment. Well written. :) nancy

I haven't even read yet, but I'm already in the mood to be mad. I HATE BULLYING!
Okay, now I've read. If I had a million stars I could give for this piece, I certainly would. Being a teacher we have been dealing with this for so many years, much of the time unsuccessfully. Why?
I'm ashamed to say, and have been too chicken to say, "Don't you see, it is in part the school system's fault." From the time children get to third grade we teach peer mediation and conflict resolution. This involves kids being taught to try to settle their own problems, such as children, that come up to "tattle." It might be something as little as, "She stuck her tongue out at me." Many roll their eyes and say, "Oh, Susie, that's not nice. Say you're sorry."
In many schools, there are conflict resolution managers, who become powerful, but as we all know, are prone to choose sides thanks to peer pressure.
By fourth grade, if you "tattle" to the teacher, depending upon the school's philosophy, you even face negative consequences for being a "tattler, or crybaby."
Basically, by fifth grade, kids are already so far gone into that culture of don't be a snitch, they'd rather take the hits than tell. Therein, lies the problem. Teachers already have so much on their plates and so many disruptions, which they in turn are punished for, they may try to fix problems, but unfortunately, the culture is set in stone by that time and problems are taken care of on the playground or after school.
Until parents and school officials take this seriously at the tenderest of ages and stop the "don't be a snitch culture, it will only continue. I wish there was some way to stop it.
GREAT WRITE. THANK YOU FOR SHARING! Gees, I don't even have six stars...

I can see this one resonated with you. I was watching television the other day and I was flummoxed at how disrespectful members of congress were to each other. Some were obviously bullies. What are the chances our children will grow up to be civilized when they see that type of behavior?

Excellent article with great references. I have a pre-teenager daughter, and this kind of thing is very real. I couldn't find anything to correct in your writing. Thank you for sharing this article with its helpful references.

Very good, timely, needed article!
First sentence is not a question in itself, so remove the question mark.
there was an explosion of teen(s)(;) moreover, they had money << semi-colon wanted there
delinquents. << LOL! How well I remember that word!
The victims knew their tormentors 99 percent of the time, they didn't have many places to hide. << Comma won't do; needs either semi-colon or period (full stop) and new sentence. I'd go with ;
Parents all is not lost, << need comma after Parents
You REALLY must send this out to newspapers! Do it online with just a click. Send to tons of them. I know some of them will print it.

This was interesting, informative and well written. People feel like they can say anything when they are behind their computers. I am always happy to hear, another cyber bully has been caught and prosecuted. Good job with the essay :)

Dossie, Bulling is certainly not a new phenomenon. As you so eloquently stated, it has been around for a long time in varying degrees. When I look at the basics, people are not taught to respect one another. The modern electronic age provides an almost indefensible environment for the bully of teens. I have seen teen sitting in the same room, within speaking distance, texting one another rather than talking. Many teens have not developed basic interpersonal skills. They fail to relate the other person to a human being.
The problem got worse when mom no longer stayed home and fulfilled the role as a housewife and mother. Children have too much free time on their hands. That is a breeding ground for trouble.
As you can tell, this is a passion of mine, and I could go on forever. Curtis

I share more of what you've said. It seems life the way we once knew it has been turned on its head. It's not always a bad thing, but I think we lack balance. Thanks for this review!

What a wonderful bit of writing and useful information. I can clearly relate to this era not even being close to what we grew up in before the normalcy of internet, games, MTV and other channels. Even in New Zealand the kids are not the same as I remember. Great information and fantastic write. xoxo Kiwi

I was bullied growing up a lot. And I don't even understand why. Bullying tatics have become so technologically advanced. A few months ago, I saw an LMN Movie about it. A smart 16 year old girl was beat almost half to death by her peers for being a virgin or something.
If you ever want to write a longer story, I'd say to add in a decade by decade synopsis starting after Bullying - 1950s into Cyberbullying.
Where to find serenity in this world. This is a very informative article. Alarming facts and statistics. Excellent work.

That's a great idea, I'll think about it. It saddens me that folks are so darn mean. We are not advancing very much as humans. Thanks again for this great review, I appreciate it!~
