This is an excellent short story. You use good imagery and descriptive word choices. Many readers will enjoy this theme. This is thought provoking. I remember a similar incident years ago. I was complaining but didn't realize I was talking to the owner. Embarrassing. Well written!

Best wishes,

Alex

I really enjoyed your story! The dialogue between Hazel and Jillian is so clever. The twist at the end is perfect. Your story kept me entertained from start to finish. I appreciate how you made the characters so full of personality. Keep up the fantastic work!

Thank you so much for the excellent review and your rating. I wanted to tell the story of people who constantly try and expect to get over, especially in the garment business. It started to become humorous, and I just went with it. Glad you enjoyed it.

I think we would both agree, people like Ms Dumont aren't very nice, and even though she's fictional I'm so glad she was put in her place, it reminds me a little of the film, Lady in red, but in reverse, beautifully written, good luck, blessings Roy

I do enjoy dialogue-only stories, and this one is fun.
The good old Karen scenario, with the constant complainer, pulled up in her idea that the customer is always right.
That is a misunderstanding, that too many play on.
Well written and a just outcome.
Tim

Thank you for the wonderful review and the stars. I'm also glad you enjoyed the scenario and Karens aren't the only ones doing it. Such snobbery and an insult to the intelligence of the employee/owner.

Hi Sandollar. It is a nice little story. I rather enjoy these quickies. They are easy to read, easy to respond to, easy to rate. I always have issues with rating anothers stories. It's a very personal thing. You've spend time and energy writing it, and I know how that goes. When someone - you don't know - makes a decision to give you a rating - 4 stars vs 5 - and the gawd awful - 6...Whoa...

The only issue I found with your line - and I'm sure you've heard this before...Merchandizing - merchandising... Hummm, I suppose they are both sorta right, but everything I found says "s" is the correct way. I don't know...Maybe so...Maybe not...

Thanks for the story. I enjoyed it. Short - sweet - a flash in the pan...

David

Thanks for your candid review. I'm a little surprised since this was written last year but better late than not at all. I always respect an honest review so thank you for your rating as well.

The conversation flowed in a logical fashion and your point about returns is well taken. I found a few things that made this seem to be forced. You have accused Mrs. Dumont but unless a pattern of returng once used clothes is establised, such as every time there is dance or social event, there is no basis for the accusation.

How do we know she can't afford the clothes on her back, and what is it that is obvious.

In actual dialog woudn't Jillian just say that Jaques doesn't work here. If Ms Dumont wants more info, she'd ask.
The paragraph starting with "Do you really see... Sounds more like Jillian's hopped up on a soap box.

The last four lines sing. That's a good piece of dialog. Snappy and to the point.

My comments are, of course, subjective and you can consider them my opinion only. I think you write well but dialog is a tough nut to crack and I've got a long way to go myself. Because the story did what it was supposed to and flowed well I'm giving you five stars.

Thank you for your review and comments. Yes, most of your comments were subjective and that's fine. I usually have no trouble with dialogue, (although I am still learning as we all are.) If Jillian sounds like she's on a soap box, she probably has been on the receiving end of a lot of high handed customer BS. We know she can't afford the clothes on her back because she is always bringing things that she's worn back to the store for exchange or refund. Jillian is more of a bitch and a snob than Ms. Dumont, of the Richmond Dumonts. So she can handle Hazel. Glad you liked the last four lines. So, thank you for your review
    and the rating.

The word count restrictions were such that you couldn't really establish her past relationship with the store. I see your point though I work at Home Depot the returns capital of the retail industry -- Good luck in the contest.

Good story. Theft is a huge problem for retail stores and this is just one way the merchants can be taken advantage of.

Best of luck in the contest.

Thanks so much for the great review and five star rating. Yes, that's so true. Stores lose millions every year. And I hate those customers that think they can get away with anything. Thanks for the good wishes for the contest.

Sandollar,

You handled the story about a major problem in our society very well, Too many think it's simply nothing , the store can afford it, but they never takek into account just how many people might be thinking the same way. Very good!

Thanks so much for your wonderful review and the five star rating.Yes, people should be mindful. There's so much money being lost this way and the honest consumer is the one who ends up paying for that.

I like this exchange, especially the customer service woman who refuses to back down to this imperious customer who thinks she has the right to take advantage of the store and who thinks it is OK to talk down to the store's employees.
Their personalities both come out well from the dialogue, without your having to add any outside analysis. Brooke

    Thanks Brooke,
Your wonderful review and rating mean a lot since it's coming from you. I tried to convey exactly that, so I'm so happy it came across in the dialogue.
