I don't necessarily agree. I like this chapter just where it is. I goes well with what has come before and adds to the already tense level of the story. Of course, this is as I have said before, you book and you know what is best, I think you should leave it just where it it. I also like the length. It is not only interesting and filled with marvelous descriptions, it skillfully paints a terrific picture of just what type of dog Rudy has trained. Very good work with this chapter.

This was a great story. It seems that Special Agent Stein was a match for Grace... that's wonderful.

One thing: just like her dame?

I liked knowing that this dog was going to do good.

Perhaps, as you mentioned in your notes, this chapter would do well earlier in the book to help explain what the guys do to train the dogs. I am sure you'll find the perfect place.

Thanks for allowing us to read this one too!

    Hi Ziggy,

Dam is the 'proper' way to designate a 'mother dog' and a sire is the daddy. I'm so glad you liked this one. I think I know the perfect place to use this chapter, back toward the beginning when he first meets Cathy.

I'm glad I decided to share it and even more glad you liked it!

Yes! That's what I was thinking, without wanting to be too forward. It would give us such a clear idea of the work that's done on the farm... in the kennel. And I knew another word in its place. Thanks for broadening my vocabulary. I shall surely have reason to pass that along! Z

YES... first opener. Brilliant! What a super-stunning chapter. How marvellous. The six, by the way, is not for this chapter... It's for the most gripping and engrossing book I have read for many years. Thankyou, Gayle. Pat.

Don't try too hard, Gayle... you might over-egg the mix and spoil the cake. I am serious.
Stick to what you do well, which is characters... also suspense. There is a tremendous amount of suspense in this book. I love it. NEVER strain to attain greater heights, they're there already. Any strain would show through the writing. Be natural. You are a clever person with a marvellous imagination. How the dickens you can bear to let your baby out to be pawed over by so many strangers every chapter, Lord alone knows. How many of us have stayed around?

I have not read a book for eight years before I met fs in december. However, I have a history of speed reading and re-reading old favourites twice a year... I had thousands of books from Francis, Deighton, Maclane, Haggard, mcCaffrey, Niven, Asimov, Upfield, L'Amour, to classics like Dickens and etc. Other books I bought (usually second hand) at the rate of about six per week... Kept the ones I liked, went out and bought all I could find by that author. What I am trying to illustrate is that I was a compulsive reader and I had reasonably wide tastes. Yours is easily on a steady level in my heart with mcCaffrey... dick Frances and Ellis Peters. Thankyou.

    Pat.

This is an interesting chapter. It could be developed into a story on its own. Grace sounds like a dog that has a mind of her own. She is her own dog. She cooperates because she wants to cooperate not because she's force to.

You have Gracie down pat, and wasn't it funny how Agent Stein reacted to her? Two alpha females, now you talk about a pair! I see nothing but good things ahead for them and God help the drug runners!

    Thanks so much,

Gayle,

I'm glad you posted this, even though it's a digression in your book. It's a wonderful read. You might put it in early, when Cathy and Rudy are getting to know each other. This could be a story Rudy tells Cathy.

I found one nit, a sentence without a subject or a verb:

"Blackest of black, tall, sleek and yet [she was] at least fifteen pounds heavier than the top 'ideal weight' for a Doberman, let alone a female."

    Hey Dave,

Hey, meant to tell you, I agree about the work 'illegals' in that last chapter. Changed it to the 'bad guys'. You were so right about that one. Glad you liked this one!

An amazing piece of writing. You could write a whole book about this dog and her escapeds on the border patrol. It would be great reading. Well done.

just like her dam--dame
Cute story and very enjoyable. I prefer smaller dogs, but Dobermans are fine, too. Good use of detail in the description of the animal and the training. Cheers. Ray.

So glad you enjoyed this chapter. It was fun to write. In this case ehe dam is the mom, like the sire is the dad. Sure appreciate you stopping by,

just like her dam <-- umm what's a 'dam'?

you know what you could do? have this chapter end with a phone call from jim and lenny and the twins.... the next chapter can be with the gang and show what happened before the phone call to rudy .... hey just a thought ;-)

good chapter - loved the description of gracie - especially the muscles under velvet skin

didn't notice any spaggies or typos (good work reginald! ;)

The story about the training of K-9 dogs was interesting. I had wondered about the type of training they went through. Good job, but there is one problem I saw. the Blackest of the black paragraph starts with a long incomplete sentence. You could fix by inserting she was after black. Sounds like you're well on the way with your book. Congratulations! My best, Marjie

Another excellent chapter here, Gayle. Gracie sounds a lot like Tony and Amy, a true credit to the breed. It definitely looks like her new handler knows exactly what she's doing and I'm guessing will have no problems. Very well done.
