Wow, Jim, this is a true magnum opus! I've just been watching a programme on POWs on Alderney (British Channel Islands) during WW2) so your incredibly moving free verse is timely and very moving for me. As ever, you embody the narrator of the poem and make it seem real and current. The story you tell is a tragic one told against a backdrop of civil war in the harshest of conditions, softened only by the prospect (however unlikely) of being reunited with the beloved Rose. The concluding 7 lines are stunning in their imagery. Well done, Jim, and good luck! A strong contender! Debbie

Jim, a powerful and sad poem. Had me hooked from the start. Andersonville Prison certainly was a hell hole. But love still wins out. thanks for the video. A nice touch.
Have a great day.

a powerful and moving tribute to those POWs who lost their lives at the infamous Anderson POW prison during the civil war. I did not know this story which you brought to life in your poem.

Oh Jim. You know how to lament in poetry. So very sad. Did you mean "from" TN instead of "form"? I don't know poetry rules very well so please correct me and ignore if was intended. Good luck. You are a winner to me all the time. Esther

I enjoy all the different forms of poetry you post, and I'm not even a poetry guy. But no mater what style you choose or format, your prose is top notch to me. Thanks for sharing.

You did an excellent job of showing the ugliness that is war in your beautiful story poem. The images were vividly clear, with a sad expected outcome for the hero on a white horse.

Wars are pretty meaningless It destroys individuals. It can encompass love, loss life pain ,humiliation all in that one word. The poem is a beautiful narration of a prisoners thoughts about his love and his hopes to go back to her .The concluding lines are briliant...

I have to say, Jim, I was enthralled by this from beginning to end. In fact, I didn't want it to end!
A sad tale recounted pragmatically without a hint of slush or self pity.
It's memorable, and that's what counts.

Hi Jim, this poem gave me chills. I couldn't pull my eyes away until I reached the end, and I was saddened when you didn't meet your Rose. A very heart-wrenching story.
