This is great fun and kept me very amused all the way through! I'm also impressed at how you managed to contain this very well expressed account so neatly within the 1000 word limit. The bird theme is imaginatively conveyed from the start with the reference to Poe's raven. Thereafter, those two episodes are hilarious and I think I would have been doubled up with laughter too. That said, the second attack sounded particularly painful and I hope there was no avian flu transmitted. But you've done well here. I enjoyed your writing style and humour. Good luck! Debbie

That is funny, I don't care who you are! You write very well. I must tell you in all honesty, I would have been laughing too, but I would have a least offered you a kleenex or bandaid. Good writing. Karen

In P2 should "eucalypts" not be eucalyptus?
A comical and smart bird who achieved his goal and enjoyed your sausages.
Suppose the remainder of the barbeques went smoother than that particular incident did.

Thanks so much! Eucalypts is a correct plural. Very unusual word, I grant you. :)

If I had a shotgun nearby, that kookaburra would have been next to the sausages lying on the barbie. We have the onerous seagull that acts of if they were pirates of the Carribean.

I don't know anything about Kookaburras, unless maybe the wings at Outback Steakhouse. But I'd have to say I'd probably have been laughing too as it kept stealing your sausages. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I liked how you made this humorous story even more engrossing by adding a little drama and mystery throughout. Very well done. I'm sorry about your incident but it was definitely quite humorous! hehe

Ughh! The thought of a bird taking food out of my mouth! :-D. So glad everyone around you thought this was funny as you were being traumatized!
You have really well done descriptions in here:
"picnic table was groaning with food"
"slammed mercilessly against unyielding wood"
It draws a vivid picture of your experience.
Great story! Julie

I must admit I am having a google myself, I don't think we have to many kookaburras in South Australia, so I've never experienced them as a thief, but I have found out how emus are the most treacherous of Australia's amimals, and very treacherous, well done, blessings Roy
