A lovely description of a tragedy courageously overcome. I love your motto. And your attitude is inspirational.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 9 years ago, and I won't let it define me either.
Keep on overcoming! God bless you.

Dear Kevin, my goodness, this is such a nice surprise and so honoring to me. How very kind and generous you are! I'm glad you took the time to find this as it is way back there in my crowded portfolio. Thank you, again, and have a wonderful day,
Sal :))

Sally, You did very well with your vision problem. I am surprised your eye doctor didn' find it earlier. But since it has no cure, I guess it doesn't matter. I am glad you can still write. Maybe you can learn brail and write in brail if you go totally blind. You are a very strong woman to overcome this.
Congrats for placing third in the contest and getting published.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Thank you, dear Joan. I was rather poor until my mother remarried when I was twelve. I only went to the doctor when absolutely necessary. My first exam was at eighteen. RP can only be detected with dialation and confirmed by a retina scan. I'm so glad you were able to read and review this, Joan. It is greatly appreciated. Sending you my best today as always,
Sally xoxo

You're welcome, Sally. How do they figure out when to do a retinal scan. I know I get my eyes dilated every other time I go to the eye dotor.
Best to you, too.

Hi Sally, I promised I'd revisit your story, and so I have.
You are a superstar, lady!
You have overcome great odds to be the person you are.
Crushing disability, I like that analogy.
Faith and your husband's support are so very important and you made sure to include this in your sincere and honest story.
Congratulations on your talent, skill and perseverance,
Rhonda

Aw...thank you, Loren. I am so blessed to read this. I am glad if this story helps anyone in their lives and especially in the challenges that can easily sideline us. I know so many talented people who have given up because of personal problems, discouragement, and health issues. My writing gift is just that, it is a God-given gift and I must run with it and develop it, regardless. You are a blessing to ,e, Llren.
Sending you my best today as always,

You are indeed an overcomer. I am so glad you pulled over and called your husband while driving. SMART MOVE. It terrifies me to think of what could have happened had you kept going. You, my dear, are such an inspiration to me, "the wind beneath my wings" comes to mind. You should reach up right now and pat yourself on the back. Better yet, give yourself a hug from me. To hell with social distancing. This was quite well written, even knowing some of the background. I hope you have a wonderday day. (It's a gray day hre! Yippee!) Hugs from a distance.

Congrats on your well-deserved prize for this powerful piece! Your tale is both heartbreaking and uplifting--three of my colleagues are near-blind; they, too, overcome much. Kudos! Cheers. LIZ

I love your story; it's amazing! It also sounds terrifying and tragic, but what I love is the overcoming part, and the joy that is so evident in your life. I enjoyed the music video.
You have a huge, beautiful family -- God bless all of you! But I don't see King in there. Is King also your guide dog in real life? And who ARE all those people, lol? Maybe King is hidden in the back. I didn't realize that you're quite tall (as you've pointed out in your story), and it suits you.
It's encouraging to realize how much you've overcome and that you chose writing as a new career, which also suits you!
I found one error, obviously an oversight:
I felt like the Apostle Paul on the road to Emmaus.
-->
I felt like the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus.
Your faith is the most encouraging thing about you -- even after drenching your own blouse with tears after learning of your encroaching blindness, you didn't give up. I have often wondered how you felt, when you first learned what was happening to you, and you write about your feelings with such honesty and clarity, without apologizing or asking for sympathy. I am sure that there were many times when you found comfort in your relationship with God, and I am also glad you have Jackson as a loving husband, and such a supportive (and large) family! Thank you so much for sharing your remarkable story.

Thank you so much for the lovely review, kind compliments, and stars galore! I am blessed once again, Mary Kay. Yes, obviously I have fallen a bit from my tenure as a Sunday school teacher. (Please don't tell my former students in the faith!) It most certainly was Damascus. The Apostle Paul was well-traveled. ;)
This photo is only showing part of Jackson's huge family. I have one brother and my one sister still remaining on my side. My sister and brother live in my native Georgia, but I rarely see them. Everyone else passed away long ago. They all love my book though and have sent me kind congratulations. :) I'm delighted to see you smiling face with my remaining eyesight today and your presence here on FanStory is pure sunshine!
Sending you my best today as always,
Sal xoxoxoxo!!!

Thank you for your beautiful reply, Sally. It's lovely that Jackson has such a big, beautiful family, and that you're a part of it! Your children and grandchildren must be in there somewhere, too.
Yes, the Apostle Paul did get around quite a bit! Wow, you were also a Sunday School teacher once! I am learning more and more things about you :-) Love and blessings,
Mary Kay xoxo

Thank you, dear Mary Kay. My three grandsons are close by in the photo, but my granddaughter is on the front row with her cousins. My real dog, Bo, passed a few years ago and I have not replaced him yet. I have a several connections in the blind community to service dogs and training. King is the name I have waiting. :)
Right now, I use a blind cane when I walk outside during the day. At night, Jackson and I go walking hand-in-hand or go grocery shopping. My life is very different than most, but still a good life. Thank again for the kind review and helpful critique.
Love, Sal xoxo

Well Sally I'm sorry that your eyesight isn't what it should be, but happy that you're an overcomer! Everything in life happens for a reason, Sally. You are meant to write and share your love with everyone. God loves you and He's smiling. This is a good entry for the Share Your Story contest.

Thanks for sharing your story. My brother had very bad eyesight throughout his life and had similar problems at school. He eventually went completely blind but continued his passion of restoring old farm machinery. I have the utmost admiration for you both.
Best wishes
