A very interesting memory from your youth. Amazing how such things and details can stick with us over fifty years.
On a side note. I think you have an excellent chance in the non-fiction contest, provided you do one thing.
Change the category from General fiction (which will disqualify you) to non-fiction Bio.

I'm a Greek American, but this bright bavk memories for me too. As the youngest in a large family, I thought people would regret brushing me off, if I were to leave. I placed my little packed bag on the front porch. No one noticed but my mom made lamb a lot.
It was while I was eating that I informed everyone I was almost gone, my bag was on the porch. They looked and laughed.
This was a well written story and as you see, it truly brought back memories for me, too. I enjoyed reading.
